R,: F. -CARMAN MAKES WESTERN NOMINATIONS New York, Marcli 1. It. K. Carman, who is "wintering one of the biggest strings of horses in the eastat Belmont Park., is expected back from California nest week. The Carmau horses have been thriving since their -letup and the older division is likely to race, to advantage during 1011. This string had been campaigned steadily for a long period and the -horses seem more robust and rugged in every particular than ever before. Some of the horses that lwre the stable colors creditably last season, as well as most of the juvenile collection, have been nominated for stake events to be run on both eastern and western courses. Starbottle, the four-year-old chestnut son of Hastings Sunflsh. purchased from August Belmont last summer," is eligible to, the Phoenix Hotel Handicap at one mile and a sixteenth to be run over the course of the Kentucky Association at Lexington. Bonnie Kelso, one of the best long-distance performers in the barn, has 4een nominated for the samo event. Mr. Carman has named Cohort, Question Mark and AL Camlioii for the Brewers Selling Stakes, a dash of a mile. The former, a horse with a high turn of speed, comes to hand early. The distance suits him nicely and If Air. Carman decides to ship ,him to the blue grass state he will likely prove a formidable candidate in races of this character. The Carman two-year-olds are well thought of on account, of their breeding, conformation and yearling trials. They were selected with great care at the Saratoga sides in August. California Queen, Lady Sapphire, Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson and Inspector Lestrade have been entered in the Elmendorf and Raceland Stakes. This is an exceptionally good-looking lot and there is reason to believe they belong iu the stake class. Lady Sapphire, a brown filly by nandspring Interview, and California Queen, a bay filly by Inflexible Iegare. are Mr. Carmans nominations to the Elmendorf Stakes, for fillies at four and a half furJoiifjK. In the Raceland Stakes, for colts and geldings at the same distance, the nominees are: Sherlock Holmes, brown colt by Inflexible Orsina; Doctor Watson, chestnut colt by Hcno Rubbish, and Inspector Lestrade, chestnut colt by Burgomaster Trovatora. The former colt is striking in appearance and if he lives up to promises he may prove the star of the two-year-old division. Nominations have been liberally made to features to be decided on the New York courses, and Mr. Carman will likewise enter generously in stakes to lie announced in the near future. The Carman horses are daily doing several miles of jogging under the sheds of the enclosed barns. This form of exercise will fit them admirably for gallops in the open. The outdoor work will commence shortly after Mr. Carmans arrival. Magazine. Semprolus. Horizon, The Turk, Meridian and the other horses that bore the white and bine with distinction are training satisfactorily.
