CHAPULTEPEC BEATS JOHN GRIFFIN II. El Paso. Tex., March 31.. Summerlike weather prevailed today, it being even u bit wanner than was comfortable. Au evenly balanced cartl of races of the selling variety drew the regular Friday attendance to the Juarez track and despite the lack of quality in the lields. good sport resulted. Followers of public form had a most disastrous day. not one of their selection being able to score. The failures of Deneen, Force and L. M. Eckert, all three of which were backed heavily by the smart set, gave the ring one of the most profitable days of the season. The third race, an allowance affair at lives and a half furlongs, served to attract the best field of the afternoon. John Griflin II. was accorded the position of favoritism, chiefly 6u account of his recent good races and a supposed return to the form displayed by this good sprinter in the past. Ho went to "the post somewliatsore, but had his old-time speed and, after setting-a. hot .pace from the start, he only succumbed to the winner iu the closing strides. Starter Mars Cassidy left tonight for Norfolk, Va., accompanied by his assistaut. James Osbourne. Harry Morrissey, who acted as one of his assistants here, will act as starter for the remainder of the meeting. Prior to the departure of Mr. Cassidy, ho reinstated jockey T. Rice so that that rider could have the mount on Bettie Sue iu the Derby, for which he had been engaged some time back. Jockey Joe Kooney carried off the riding honors of the day witli three firsts and a second out of live mounts. At a sale of horses in the paddock today, the following were sold: Lena Ix-ch, 50, Defy, .00, Lawn. 1911.sh75. Annie Wells. 20. all to J. J. Ochoa; Bosnia, 25, to E. Matthias; Hoyle, 25. to L. F. Konssey; Kmnia G. and War Jig were offered, hut as unsatisfactory bids were made, they were both bid in.
