GETTING READY AT LOUISVILLE. Preparations Actively Begun for Most Promising Meeting in History of Churchill Downs. Louisville. Ky., April 1. Beginning Monday the oflices of the New I-ouisville Jockey Club will present au animated scene, for from that time until Mav 13. the opening date of the spring meeting at Churchill Downs, Edward Jasper, acting secretary, will bu busy completing the arrangements for the biggest meeting in the history of thoroughbred sport in Kentucky. Mr. Jasper has been officiating as racing secretary for the Jockey Club at Juarez, Mex.. from which place he will reach Louisville Moudav morning. His first work will bo to assign stable room to those horsemen who will ship here from Mexico, Florida. New York and elsewhere. It Is certain that Mr. Jasper will find this .1 puzzling task, for the reason that more horses will be raced at Churchill Downs this spring than ever before. Conditions in the east have brought this about and. besides, the New Louisville Jockey Club, with its increased purses and richer stakes, offers to the racing fraternity exceptionally alluring inducements. The stakes run in former years that heretofore carried a value of ,000 added, have been inereased to ,500 guaranteed value, while those which were formerly of ,000 guaranteed value have heen increased to .500. The Churchill Downs Handicap, with a value of ,300, has been added to the list of stake events. The cliglblcs for the Derby include some of the best three-year-olds iu training in this country. Winn, manager or the New Louisville Jockey Club was here recently, he announced that the total number or entries Tor the twelve fixed events to he decided at the Downs exceeded the list of any other year. The total now is 1.13ft, an average or ninety-five to the stake. Last vear the total number or entries Tor the stakes was SOG. Despite unTavorable weather conditions the work or completing the improvements at the Downs progressed favorably during the past week anil long berore the date for the sport to begin on that historic course everything will be in readiness. The paddock will present a pleasing appearance, inasmuch as it lias been Tcmoved to a point north of the old location and is now surrounded by a lawn and many trees. The jockeys quarters have been modernized and the oHices used for the pari-mutuel department have been enlarged ami rendered more comfortable and commodious. All of the pari-mutuel devices will be new and this part of the enclosure will resemble the counting room ot a bank. The man who sells the tickets will also register them, which means Unit the ticket booths will be occupied by but one Individual. Under the obi system one man sold the tickets and, another registered them. Churchill Dowus pari-mutuel equipment for tho spring meeting will be a vast improvement over that ot the past. In all twenty-one machines will be in operation. These will be or the latest design, embracing the perfection of detail. These devices are twice as large as the antiquated makeshifts used heretorore. Each will show the total sales and the man in charge will register .the transaction simultaneously with the delivery ot the ticket to the pur A chaser. There will be no "clicker." one operator thus doing the work of two. Ten of these machines will be established iu the Downs betting ring next week and eleven others will be installed later.
