NORFOLK PATRONAGE GAINS YESTERDAYS RACING ENJOYED BY BIGGEST CROWD OF THE MEETING. Short-Priced Horses Continue to Take Lions Sliaro of Purses Volume of Speculation Improves and More Liberal Odds Aro Quoted. Norfolk, Va., April 10. With racing conditions decidedly more agreeable than those which prevailed last week, a large crowd turned out to participate in the sport at the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course this afternoon. The gathering was the largest of the meeting and speculation was keen-. Seventeen layers transacted business and tho odds were much more liberal than- during the first few days of the meeting. Followers of public form kept up their winning streak, the afternoons results showing three favorites and two well-backed second choices leading their fields at the finish. The fourth race, a dasli of seven furlongs, which served as the feature of the card, furnished the closest finish of the afternoon. There were only three starters, with Banives ruling a 0 to 20 favorite. He won, but it was only after a desperate struggle all through tho homestretch that he just did manage to get up in. the closing stride to beat The Golden Butterfly by a head. Banives was backed to the exclusion of the othera contesting the race, and his backers had a few moments ot anxiety, as Guy Bums was forced -to ride one of his most desperate finishes to win. The first suspension of the meeting was handed out by starter Cassidy today when Guy Burns was suspended for live days for disobedience at the post on Monsieur X. William P. Biggs, who acted as one- of the stewards here during the firs.t four days of tho meeting, returned to Baltimore yesterday to take- up hi duties at Pimlico. It is announced that Attorney-General Williams will make a personal investigation of betting conditions at the Jamestown track this week and that, regardless of the methods that he finds in vogue, arrests will be made In order to provide another test case before the special magistrate that County. Judge Lawless will appoint upon request of Governor Mann to pass upon the questions involved. Should the. laying of odds as practiced at the Jamestown track be held legal under the Virginia law, it is not improbable that a now track will be built on Alexander Island, which is only a few miles distant from Washington. Before the Virginia legislature passed an aliti-bookniaking law some fifteen years ago, racing was conducted at Alexander Island and was well patronized by residents of the national capital. William Garth has sold Keswick, the thrcc-year-old brother to T. S. Martin, to John E. Madden. Keswick is a finished steeplechaser and will prob-ablv be sent to France by Mr. Madden to join the stable that Thomas Hitchcock is racing in that country.
