J, ; 4, ONE OF AMERICAS FOREMOST STUDS . -T. : ; .T. : . ; ; One of the foremost, if not the foremost, of our breeding establishments remaining unimpaired is that owned by II. P. Whitney and located at Brook-dale, New Jersey. Here are gathered over llfty of the choicest and most carefully selected broodmares in existence, including such racing celebrities as Artful, Black Venus. Blue Girl. Daisy F., Eugenia Burch, Flip Flap, Honiton. Irish Keel. Jinks. Kil-deer. .Martha II., Miss Hamburg. Morningsido, Perverse. Sister Mary. Stamina, Tanya. Yankee Girl and Yorkville Belle, together with such others, notable as broodmares chiefly as the St. Simon mure Lady Frivoles, Forget, dam of the Middle Park Plate winner Borrow. Handspuu, Melba. Saliie of Navarre. Urania, Fiesole, Repute and Xela. "With such grand mares mated with Hamburg-. Broomstick, Burgomaster and Sandriughain. winners were and are bound to come and Mr. Whitneys great success in English racing last year was something to be con-tidentlv expected. That success should at least be duplicated this year and it is not at all impossible that the second American winner of the Epsom Derby will be Brookdale-hred, but not this year. That event. If it comes about, will be in the years to follow 1911. The marcs of the great commercial breeding establishments of a half dozen years back have mainly been sold abroad and such private studs as Brook dale, Castleton, The Nursery and Hurricaua are now the real backbone of American thoroughbred breeding. In years to come the overflow of these great studs will be of the greatest assistance in the rebuilding of American breeding to its former healthy proportions and more. An instance of their prospective helpfulness is seen in the recent transfer of Celt to take the place of Fatherless at the head of the Ellerslie Stud in Virginia. This will give to Virginian breeding an infusion of the very potent American line of Himyar. Domino. Commando- and quite probably restore Ellerslie lo the prominence it enjoyed when Eolus made it famous through the excellence of his progeny. Some of the young Ham-burgs may after a while also play an important part along the same lines in different narts of our country, to say nothing of what may be in store for sons of Bock Sand. The components of Mr. Whitneys stud are given here, with the suggestion that students of breeding will find much pleasure in considering and analyzing its treasures: Stallions.
