SEMPROLUS ON THE SHELF. New York. April 14. R. F. Carman, since his return from California last month, has been devoting his personal attention to his big string of horses at Belmont Park. Tlio Carman horses were carefully handled in two big enclosed barns at the upper end of the course, facing the Hempstead turnpike, during the winter months. Out of a total of thirty-three horses, the only one to break a clean bill of health was Semprolus. Mr. Carman will miss the services of this grand colt for spring racing. The son of Sempronius Myrlelus won three stakes the Canar-sio. National Stallion and Flash last summer. His winnings of 3,245 topped the stables list. An attack of influenza played havoc witii Semprolus. and from a handsome individual, carrying a lot of llesh, ho fell off to a mere shadow of himself. Of late he has improved greatly, but it is doubtful if it will be advisable to put him in hard training before the middle of May. Horizon, the fast daughter of Hastings that won the Clover. Daisy, Distaff and Venus Stakes last season, looks as well as she ever did. It is reasonable to suppose that she will show good form again this season. Starbottle, another horse bred at Mr. Belmonts Nursery Stud, has filled out wonderfully. He is a big-framed chestnut and just the sort to pack weight and race well over a considerable distance of ground. The Turk, a four-year-old brown son of Heno Craeello. which Mr. Carman purchased from William S. Fanshawe at Shcepshead Bay last June, is going along soundly. The Turks feet prevented him from showing his early spring and summer form later in the year. Attention was paid to the ailing members and he now. runs as square as a die. Otherwise The Turk is absolutely sound, and it is not improbable that he will duplicate his high-class performance when ho defeated Dalmatian and Prince Imperial. While The Turks forte is racing over a route, he, nevertheless, is a sprinter of some ability. , , , Magazine, now six years old. and winner of the Freeport and Fleetwiug Handicaps last season, gives promise of training on. His off fore ankle tilled considerably a few seasons back. The enlargement lias not disappeared entirely, but the leg is cool as the proverbial cucumber. "Maggy," as he is called by the stable hands, always was a striking individual with a bay coat resembling satin. .Meridian, the three-year-old bay colt by Broomstick out of Sue Smith, for which Mr. Carman paid ,100 at Saratoga at the dispersal sale of Charles L. Harrison, bids fair to show improved form. .Meridian is eligible to the Blue Grass Stakes, run at Lexington, and the Kentucky Derby, run at Louisville. Bonnie Kelso, a plashing stayer by the Watercress stallion, Waterboy, has improved in appearance to such extent that his old-time owner, George Odom, will hardly know him. Question Mark, Sir Cleges. Campcon, Arcite. M. Cambon, Hogon, Merry Lad and Stare are showing well in the their gallops. This has been a backward spring, and although the Carmaii horses are In good condition, that does not mean lit. Mr. Carman has a fine collection of two-year-old colts and lillies. They have had some useful exercise work, but nothing in the- nature of a tightening up process. It has been preparatory wcrk thus far. Those having stake engagements at Lexington are: Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Watson and Inspector l.estrade. This trio is eligible to the Raeeland Stakes. Lady Sapphire and California Queen are named for the Elmendorf Stakes, a race for fillies. Starbottle and Bonnie Kelso have been nominated for the Phoenix Hotel Handicap, at one mile and a sixteenth, to be run on the opening day at Lcxingtou, April 29.
