. - THE TWO THOUSAND GUINEAS TO BE RUN NEXT WEDNESDAY 4 Next week is one of the truly great and important weeks of tlie English racing season. The Newmarket First Spring meeting begins Tuesday and terminates Friday. In its course two of the five great classics of the English turf will bo decided, the Two Thousand Guineas, for three-year-olds, and the One Thousand Guineas, for three-year-old fillies. The Two Thousand will be run Wednesday afternoon and the One Thousand on Friday. Roth are run over the mile course known as the Rowley Mile. The Two Thousand of this year closed with 312 nominations, of which twenty-one have lteeu declared aud two are dead. This leaves eighty-nine three-year-olds eligible to start. Last year the race was won by Neil Gow. with Lemberg second and AVhisk Rroom third. Its value to the winner was then $:51,000. Presumably it will be equally valuable this year. The second horse receives ,000 and tlie third ,000. This year the race is deemed an open and uncertain affair, and the number of starters is likely to be great. So far as the racing of last year affords a clue. Seaforth. Pietri, Stedfast. St. Anton. Prince San. King William, Cyllius. Cellini, Iron Mask. Wrinkler and All Gold are the pick of the nominations. Of these Seaforth and St. Anton have started and won this year, while Stedfast. Iron Mask. All Gold and Wrinkler have also ran ami been defeated. Seaforth won the Union Jack Stakes at the Liverpool Spring meeting and had some dilliculty in defeating Athelstan. Stedfast ran third in this race. It was noted that Athelstan was the most forward in condition of the three. St. Antons success was achieved in the Column Produce Stakes at the Newmarket Craven meeting. His performance was of great merit. He was conceding much weight to each of his six opponents and the race was run in a snow storm over a track as heavy as a Newmarket track can lie, yet he won easily. Pietri. King William. Cyllius and Cellini have not started this year. Tullibardine won the Newmarket Rienuial Stakes and All Gobi was third. Prince San was the favorite for the Craven Stakes, but ran unplaced to Irish .King. Gilgandra and Ren Alder. With the top weight of 121 pounds up Iron Mask finished a pulling up fifth in a handicap for three-year-olds at seven furlongs, which was won by the American-bred colt. Toiler, carrying .! pounds. Pharos. pounds, was second; Protestant. S! pounds, third, and Mr. Relnionts good filly. Sandwich. 110 pounds, was fourth. Of the horses likely to start in the big race. Seaforth started In five races last year and won four. His lone defeat was when he deadhealed with Pietri for second place behind Rorrow in the Middle Park Plate. He won the Great Sapling Plate at Sandown Park. Michaelmas Plate at Manchester. New Stakes at Ascot and Woodcote Stakes at Kpsom. Pietri ran six times and won four. He was unplaced in his first race, the Coventry Stakes, at Ascot and beaten in the Middle Park Plate, but won the Princess Plate at Newmarket, Richmond Stakes at Goodwood, Oimerack Stakes at York and Champagne Stakes at Doncaster. Stedfast won three races out of four starts, the Premh-rgrast Stakes at Newmarket. Hook Plate at San-do.vn Park and Witherstaek Plate at Liverpool. St. Anton won the Free Handicap and the July Stakes at Newmarket. Prince San won tlie Prince of Wales Plate at York and tlie Soltykoff Stakes at Newmarket. King William won the Dewhurst Plate at Newmarket. Cyllius won the Autumn Produce Stakes at Ncw-burv. Cellini won Englands richest race for two-year-olds, the National Rreeders Produce Stakes at Sail-down Park. Wrinkler won the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood and the Rerkshire Foal Stakes at Newburv. Iron Mask was iu the front rank of our two-year-olds in this country last year, and All Gold, known iast year as the Persimmon Dame dOr colt, won the Tattersall Sale Stakes at Doncaster for Mr. Whitney. Aincricau-bred eligibles to the Two Thousand are August Relnionts Relfry. by Rock Sand Roldanie; Charles Carrolls Night Rider, by Meddler Ballantrae. and his Crimson Rambler, by Meddler Irish Ivy; W. A. Chanlers Alpheus, by Olympian Alster; James R. Keenes Runnymede. by Voter Running Stream; Rtid Walkers Adamite, by Adam Musette, said to be a grand colt iu appearance; H. P. Whitnevs Iron Mark, by Disguise Royal Rose, and L. Wiuaus The Spy. by Disguise Semper Paratus. It is snposed the majoritv of these, if not all. will go to the post and English critics concede Iron Mask a good chance, lielfrv. Alpheus. Runnymede, Adamite and The Spy have never started in a race. Night Rider was a good two-vear-old in England last year and Crimson Rambler was not. While there is uo telling what Use hopes of owners may bring about in the way of starters, it is thought the following are the eligibles most likely to lie spnt to 11m? post: A. F. Rassets b. c.
