While all or the Derby candidates took their usual work today, only two of the number tried for speed. Round the World went live-eighths in 1:04J. accompanied by The Hague. She could run fast, but at no stage did her jockey let her down. Sir Dawn, a Derby eligible, went the same distance in l:0;ij. paced by Princess Industry. Sir Dawn has speed and worked well within himself. Other good work-outs were as follows: Johu Griffin II. Five-eighths in 1:12. Right good. Falcada Three-quarters in 1:20, breezing. J. IL Reed Mile in 1:4. Improving steadily. . Butter Ball Three-eighths in KVJ. Is fit. The Reach Quarter in 25. cantering. Agiiitv Three-eighths in iffs. Never better. Nethermost Quarter mile in 25. Seems to have more speed than usual. Spindle Seven-eighths in 1:80, pulling up. Extra good. Cash on Delivery Eighth mile in 12. John Robert Half mile iu 55. cantering. Upright Three-eighths in :!S. handily. One of tlie best two-year-olds at the Downs. Minco Jiminic Three-eighths in 40. Mark Antony II. Half mile in 5., breezing. Looks good. The racers owned br A. B. Spreckels, twelve in number, in charge of trainer George Berry, arrived todav from Oakland. Most of the horses are two-vear-olds. From Los Angeles came twelve horses belonging to James McManus. and sixteen belonging to Henderson and Hogan. Mr. McManus has the Derbv eligibles Tay Pay and Star ORyan. Colonel Hogan. a Derbv colt, is in the Henderson and Hogan hand, and the others include Winning Widow, Flash Light, Frank G. Hogan. Acguin, Lehigh, Alamitos. Cro.v. El Toris and Garry Nola. Stable lioys call the last named "Little Jack" on account of his resemblance to Jack Atkiu. .Toekcv J. Howard is here from San Antonio to join R. L. Thomas stable. Another jockey to arrive was W. Dunn, a lightweight under contract to Carter Hall. J. F. Gaffney came to Douglas Park today from Nashville with six horses, all seasoned campaigners. George Bryson lias taken up Watcrcooler. which had been turned out for several months. Watcrcooler holds the record at the Downs for a mile and three-sixteenths 2:00J. Mr. Bryson also lias two good fillies. Golden Ruby and Ella Bryson. Frank Keegan, track sunerintcmlent of the Juarez course, is acting in a similar capacity at the Downs. Before leaving Juarez he put another coating of top soil upon the Mexican track. He will go to Juarez to attend to other improvements after the close of tlie Latoiiia meeting. Charles F. Grainger, president of the New Louisville Jockey Club, returned today from a two-weeks sojourn at Hot Springs. Ark. He Is under the Impression that a law will be enacted in Arkansas providing for racing and the pari-nintuel system of wagering. .Mr. Grainger Is feeling well. He heard a great deal of talk about Kentucky racing and persons from wide sections of the country informed him they would attend tlie meetings at Lexington, Louisville and Latonia. . Col. W. E. Applegate has arrived from California. He inspected his stable today at the Downs and was naturally much pleased with Round the Worlds appearance.
