The opening of the spring meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club at the famous old Pinilico race Course- attracted many, prominent eastern racing men and a goodly representation from the west. The day was a glorious one for outdoor sport and a record-breaking crowd was iu attendance. The club, with the idea of educating local patrons of racing to tlie mtituel system of betting, which will be installed for the fall meet-lug, had th ret: pari-mutiiel machines iu operation. The public took so kindly to tlie innovation that the machines wore Inadequate to handle the volume patronage bestowed upon them. In some instances the show pay-offs were greater than the place odds. The club management was well satisfied with the experiment and it is assured this will be tlie last meeting at Pinilico with the lKtokmakers. Keen sport was provided, a majority of the finishes being close. Priscilliain and Herbert Turner were tlie winning favorites. The latters victory came in the closing race, which was a selling affair. He was entered to be sold for ,500 and was boosted by Sam Lewis, owner of Monty Fox, which finished second, to ,005, at which figure he was bought iu by his owner. S. C. Hildretli saddled two of this afternoons winners, in Priscillian and Firestone. The latter beat the heavily backed favorite, Tlie Nigger, a neck in a stirring stretch drive. Priscillian made a runaway affair of his race. The three-quarters was covered in 1:12s, which was within one-fifth of a second of the track record for the distance. There were two two-year-old races on the card. Albert Simons furnished the winner in the first in Moisnnt. while William Garths Yankee colt, Surfeit, won the other. The latter heat Communist, one of the few Kingston .juveniles now racing. Communist was a 50 to 1 shot and showed such a keen turn of speed that it is predicted lie will not long remain a maiden. William R. Midgley, a prominent rider a few years ago and later a successful trainer, lias lieen appointed patrol judge by the Maryland Jockey Club. It will be Mr. Mldgleys duty to watch the riders in the early stages of tlie racing, the idea of the club being to stamp out rough riding, which usually comes directly in the scramble for positions directly after the start. Disenfranchise, a colt by Voter Kiamesha in the Oneck Stable, was destroyed this morning. Tlie youngster was unloaded in bad condition on- liis arrival from Shoepshead Ray and developed a case of spinal meningitis. M. J. Cromwell will ship liis string from hero to Louisville at the conclusion of the meeting. Fred W. Gerhardy was at the track todar soliciting entries for thirty-eight stakes to be run at the Canadian tracks this summer. These events range in value in added money from ,000 to ,000. All clerks employed by bookmakers doing business at Pinilico were warned against betting. Those caught speculating will not be permitted to work here. One hundred entries were made for the seven races carded for Monday. There are ninety-three programmed and seven excluded. August Relmonts three-year-old Watervale worked three-quarters this morning in 1:121. It was the fastest trial ever shown over this track. Former jockey Joe Notter will be a spectator at Pinilico. He has gained so much in weight that it is doubtful if he will reduce to ride this season. Tlie Jockey Club has issued a warning to owners and trainers, against the harboring of jockey Van Rensehoten, who is alleged to have left the employ of Max Hirsch without the latters consent.
