JOE MORRIS WINS HANDICAP LATONIA DERBY WINNER OF LAST YEAR MAKES AN AUSPICIOUS DEBUT. Two of the Get of Broomstick Anions Afternoons Winners at Lexington Track Royal Captive the Only Successful Favorite. Lexington, Ky., May 3. For Hie second day of its spring meeting, tin; Kentucky Association had dry weather with" clearing skies and some sunshine after the lirst race. A liigh wind, however, made it at times disagreeable. The track was heavy and the time necessarily slow. The contests were fairly keen and the sport on the whole was good. The day. however, was full of lsottiug disappointments for the talent. Itoyal Captive in the third race being the only successful lirst choice, and she was fast weakening at the end. Another dozen strides and Uash, which had come from far hack to take second place from .Star Blue, would have won. It. II. Andersons Latonia Derby winner, .Toe Morris, making his lirst appearance of the year, won the handicap at a mile quite easily and in convincing fashion. Starbottle, the heaviest backed horse in the race, performed as if far from ready and liuislied last of the four. Lcainenee and Foxy Mary filling the place and show positions heads apart. This race will do Starbottle much good and it may he that he will turn the tables on .Toe Morris if they meet in the Camden Handicap next Saturday. Incidentally this was Joe Morris first winuing effort jn the mud. Sons and daughters of Harry Iayne Whitneys good stallion, Broomstick, performed brilliantly today. There were only three of them on the card anil each of them got some money. Irving II. Wheat crofts King Broomstick, which was considered hv breeders generally as the handsomest yearling in" Kentucky last fall, was saddled for the second race hv Ilenrv McDaniel and he won m such commanding style as to cause horsemen to at once declare him a dangerous factor for the Breeders Futuritv, which is to be run a week from tomorrow. Bachelor C.irl, a daughter of Broomstick and Wayward Lass, from the stable ot R, Bradley, made her lirst appearance in the fourth race, rushed to tlie front, HMtallwt.few strides, led all the wiiy anil won Impressively m a drive with Orcen. C. L. Harrisons Winning Witch, another daughter of Broomstick, was a fast coming third, although six lengths back at the finish. Both of these Broomstick lillies are eligible to the Kluiendorf Stakes to be run Thursday. After the race today Mr. Harrison congratulated trainer Cliff Ilammon on the showing of Bachelor Girl and remarked: "Ill have to take another try at her next Thursday, I guess." es, I now think she will start for the Elniendon, though Mr. Bradlev mav conclude to reserve her for the Breeders Futurity." trainer Ilammon replied. Filtering the stretch in the lirst race Rodktss looked like the winner, but Sam liernard, working his wav out of the bunch, overhauled her a sixteen mt anil heat her home in a drive. Sim Bernard, in the last race, was one of the biggest, disappointments of the afternoon. Carthage wiis scratched from this race after the hotting had been in progress for about ton minutes. Trainer Carmodv made the claim that Pickett, who had been slat"d for the mount, was under contract to ride for iiim, and lie refused to deposit with Secretary Shelley the usual for a losing mount, collectable in advance of the running. Pickett said that he was not r.nder contract to either Mr. Casey or Mr. armody. The latter became noisy in the office and Secretary Shelley ordered that the horse be scratched and sent Jiim oitt or the paddock. Irving IT. Wheat croft received -a cablegram this morning from Andrew Robertson of the Allendale Stock Farm. Mellourne, Australia, announcing that llastv Agnes had foaled .n colt and Miss Sain a filly, and he added that they are healthy individuals. Mr. Wheatcroft has also been advised in a letter from Loudon that the host yearling at the Duke of Portlands establishment is a son of St. Savin and Hum limn, by Carbine. Orcen Seal lias been retired from racing and is now at the St. .Tames Stud. The first mare sent to Ids court, was Eppio. T. . McDowells splendid mare. Kings Daughter, has been going suspiciously for a couple of days. There is a tilling in one of her legs, but she lias not taken a lame step. Mr. McDowell said today that be would decide in the next two or three days whether or not he would continue her in training or send her to the farm. .T. O. Keene scratched Praetorian from the second race because lie could not secure a suitable rider, iockev A. Thomas, the regular rider for the Cam-ilen stable, having been suspended for the remainder of the meeting by starter Mars Cassidy. A. L. Kirby arrived today from Louisville, with three two-year-olds. The controversy between Mose Moore and E. M. Phillips over the contract on jockey Walcott. a colored rider, has been settled, the Toriner getting the boys services. Walcott rode Meadowgrass for Mr. Moore today and gave the horse a good ride. Will Perkins is training the Moon: horses. Kd A. Tipton, of the Fasig-Tipton Co.. was among the visitors today. He lias been in Cleveland on business and took a run down here for a few days, lie said lie was not on business and that it was too earlv to talk about selling yearlings this year. The big sales of the youngsters will bo in the late summer and autumn here. Starter Mars Cassidy suspended jockey J. .T. Mc-Cabe for three days for disobedience at the post 01: Danish C.irl in the first race. Oene Elrods rheumatism kepi him in bed today. Fred Mcllor. one of HI rods lieutenants, acted as supervisor of the betting ring. Todavs visitors included W. O. Parmer, who came from liis home in Nashville, Tenn; ,and is en route to Detroit to attend the preliminary details connected witli the Windsor meeting. lie reported a big imi try list to the stakes that will be decided at "Windsor during the summer meeting and expressed the idea that this season would exceed in brilliancy anv former racing at Windsor. . jockov Eddie Taplin. who is at present in Louisville, Is much in demand among the owners here and several have made an effort to engage him to pilot their representative in the Breeders Futurity. .T. O. Keene and Miller Henderson are the most likely to secure his services. Joseph McLennan departed tonight for his home jn Chicago, where he will remgyn several days before returning to Churchill Downs to begin work. He announced that all the stakes at the Canadian -ourses filled well. Owners in this locality were ejcceedinglv liberal with their nominations and accounted for 400 entries. Among the principal ones well engaged are Countless, Governor Gray, Polls and Boola P.oola. Latest advices from Tallahassee. Fla.. where the legislature is wrestling witli an anti-racing hill, are that the outlook during the last forly-eight hours lias become more promising for the defeat of the measure. Jockey W. Obert was allowed to accept mounts and will continue riding pending further disposition by the Kentucky State Racing Commission of his apnlicaton for a license. Jockey J. Rcid, according to report, has accepted a lucrative position with a prominent stable in Germany. Dr. Joseph Hughes, president of the Chicago Veterinary College, was among todays visitors and will remain for the rest of the racing term.
