FITZ HERBERT IN ACTION S. C. HILDRETHS GREAT HORSE WINS A PURSE AT PIMLICO TRACK. Is Held at 1 to 20 in the Botting and Scores Under Restraint Surfeit Repeats for William Garth Wyandot Scores at First Asking. Baltimore. Mil.. May 2. Fitz Herbert, the star of tilt; all-aged thoroughbreds in training in this eomi-ry. made his first appearance in public since his Brooklyn Handicap victory of last year in the opening race at Pimllco this afternoon. He was in with s-.n ordinary lot and it was simply play for him to win under wraps after leading from start to liuish. That the layers held the Ilildreth crack in great respect was plainly shown by the odds quoted. He went to the iost at 1 to "0 and he was the" shortest-priced favorite that has won in a Ion? while. It was a great day for race-goers at lMmlico. Keen sport aroused enthusiasm enough to offset the chilly winds that swept across the intield. One thing that has impressed itself on race-goers is that the trainers of the various establishments have all of their horses quite lit this spring. With the meeting hereof only sixteen days duration and the outlook elsewhere in the east none too bright, all appear anxious to get what is in sight. Few mistakes are made and todays results showed live winning favorites, while the other two winners were well-backed second choices. W. II. Karrlck sprung tine of his occasional "good things" In the two-year-old, Wyandot, running in the colors of V. K. Hitchcock. Wyandot evidently had shown his connections something, as he was backed from 10 to 1 to 5 to 2 at post time. He had to be much the best to win. for when the "break came he was slow to get started and in the early stages he encountered interference. William Garths Yankee colt, Surfeit, demonstrated that his victory on the opening day was no lluke by coming back and showing a better performance thau his first effort. Tom Ilealey, who is handling what is probably the largest string here, has started to cull out. Ho sold the two-year-old Lesbos, a brother to Meclick, to G. K. Hall. He will dispose of about a dozen others before shipping to Canada. S. C. Ilildreth was a liberal nominator to the f recently closed stakes at Woodbine and Who l!on-nets. .Mr. Ilildreth has been unable to secure stalls at eltlier..plact! as yet. and in the event of his being unable to obtain the desired accommodations, he probably will ship all of his horses to Europe and dispose of them. A ruling has been issued that In future when Firestone starts he will be required to break from behind his company. The horse is a bad actor, hence the ruling. .Many entries have been made from here for the Hamilton stakes, which will close the coming Thursday. Recent work-outs at Pimlico.
