The Kentucky Derby candidate, Colston, impressed horsemen witli a work-out at the Downs this morning when he went the full mile and a quarter route of the big race in "2:11. lie ran the first eighth in 12J, the quarter in 24j. three-eighths in :G1. the half in 401, live-eighths in 1:01. three-quarters in 1:14 J. seven-eighths in l:21l, the mile in 1:421. and the mile and an eighth in 1:50. He was going easily all the way and worked the entire route not less than eight feet away from the inner rail. The performance was regarded as the best work any Derby candidate has done here this spring. Colston came out of the trial In good condition and apparently was not the least bit tired. Other Derby candidates breezed slowly today, but the older horses and some of the two-year-olds went along at a lively gait. The best were: Alice Half mile in 52. easily. Is ready. Winning Widow Half mile in 51, cantering all the way. Is ready. Yniir Three-eighths in oS. A grand looking iwo- year-old in A. B. Spreekols stable. Seems fit. The most remarkable performance at the Downs this morning was by Donau, the Kentucky Derby winner of 1!H0. He drew a cart around the course for three-quarters of a mile and rail the distance thus rigged in 1:25. This remarkable horse has taken a great dislike to having a boy on his back in ordinary track work. He is all right when the colors are up, and so trainer George Ham has devised the cart training in harness for the sou of Woolsthorpe. The two-year-old in Thomas Fortune Ryans stable at Douglas Park that was sick when it reached here from Oak Ridge Farm, in Virginia, is dead. It transpires that it was not the lilly Belle Hampton, but the chestnut filly Kate Sterling, by Woolsthorpe Sechclsea. The only arrival today was former jockey David Vitiloe, who came from Tampa, Fla., with a small string. The iwenty-ohe new pari-niuluel machines were lested Ibis afternoon at the Downs. All worked perfectly. Each machine is operated by one man and au electric battery.
