STALL PROBLEM AT WOODBINE. Toronto, Ont., May 4. Anybody with a method for accommodating two horses in one stall can get an engagement with the Ontario Jockey Club. That is Secretary Erasers problem, and he does not know its solution. Alwut twice the stable room at his disposal has been applied for. The list of applicants includes August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, who will have about twenty horses lor the opening of the Canadian season. One of yoserdays visitors at Woodbine was Charles F. Grainger, president of the New Louisville Jockey Club. He is on his way homo from Baltimore. Mr. Grainger is an enthusiastic supporter of the pari-mutuel system, and it was through the Louisville club that it was re-introduced into America and achieved its present popularity. The iirst machines employed at Baltimore are iu use at the current Pimlico meeting, and next fall they will be the exclusive medium of speculation at the Maryland track. He inspected the work on the new pavilion at Woodbine and unhesitatingly declared that Ihe system would find immediate favor and support with the public. Like all other observers of present-day conditions he is convinced that bookniaking must make way for the pari-mutuel method. St. Bass, a Kings Plater, confirmed, previous good impressions of him by working a mile in 1:53 at Woodbine through the mud. Powderman and Legislator went the same distance in 1:5S?,. and Miss Martimas did half a mile in 533. Laurier set out with the last named but could not keep up. Half a mile in 54 seconds was as slow as Bursar could be held. The Hamburg stallion Midas carried 140 pounds, including Pete Hagen, and did half a mile in 53. He is owned by Wesley Ilorton of St. Thomas, and was iu the stud last summer, but has been qualified as a hunter and will apparently be able to "come back" to the races in something like his old style. Ed Gleason is training him. The Thornellffe horses are having easy gallops. The two-year-olds are making a line Impression, and it is regarded as certain Mr. Davies will be very strong in that division this season. They are forward in condition and the first good track will see some new training records for the season at Woodbine. The Plater Sanderling Is galloping with Fair Annie and Frolic, and they are good work-mates. The Dyment horses will come down from Barrio next Monday.
