LEAMENCE TAKES HANDICAP BEATS RASH AND MUD SILL IN DRIVING FINISH AT LEXINGTON. Horses of Mediocre Quality Furnish Racing: That la Enjoyed By Usual Good Crowd Breeders Futurity to Be Decided This Afternoon. Lexington, Ky., Alay S. There was nothing particularly alluring about the card for the eighth day of the Kentucky Associations spring meeting, but the weather was ideal and another good crowd was in attendance. They were amply repaid, for, on the whole, though the horses were mediocre in. quality, the racing was highly entertaining. In a betting way, however, the talent was out of line save in two Instances. D. Rileys Leamencc, which finished second to Bonnie Kelso last time out, was regarded as the best betting proposition of the day and was a heavily supiwrtcd favorite for the handicap at a mile which featured the card. Leamenco showed, that the confidence of his backers had not been misplaced by racing into the lead entering the back-stretch and holding It to the finish, winning by hal a length from Rash, which was bungllngly ridden by E. Aiartin. Mud Sill, the Woodford and Buckner candidate for the Blue Grass Stakes and Kentucky Derby, ran a good race to finish third. He worked out the mile ad a quarter in 2:00, going the mile and an eighth lit 1:04. Captain Carmody was last all the way and he is decidedly not of Derby timber. The biggest betting upset of the afternoon came in the second race, whom Sister Florence led all tho way and won fronr the favorite, Aliss Wiggs, which latter finished half n length in advance of W. II. Laudenians Salesia, with American Girl, the second choice, a poor fifth. Aliss Wiggs was not off in her stride and was forced back shortly after the start and this proliably accounted for her defeat. Grif and Light O AI Life, the latter a first-time starter here, were considered lest of those that comprised the field in the fourth race, but their backers were doomed to disappointment, as .Moonlight came with a rush through the stretch to take the measure of both in the last few strides. lima furlished something of a surprise by Improved behavior at the post and won the mile dash from a fairly good band of platers, Loween taking second place from Helene. the favorite. Emma Stuart and Going Some, both strongly backed, were i never gerious. factors in the running. The closing dash was only a romp for Question Alark, which toyed with his opponents and won as Ids rider pleased." Solus and Indian Maid, both outsiders, accounting for the minor portions of the purse. T. C. AIcDowells good Voter colt, The Manager, is the overnight favorite for the Breeders Futurity, which is to be the feature of tomorrows splendid card and, barring mishaps or bad training luck, he will win. Jockey T. Koenior will ride him. Sixteen have been carded to start In the race, three of them Wheelwright. Praetorian and Agora from the stable of Johnson X. Camden. A. Thomas will rido Praetorian, Kennedy will be on Wheelwright and Taplin lias been engaged for Agora. The jockeys for the others are: King Broomstick. J. Howard; Joe Knight. Those returning from Latonia tortay say that the many improvements on the Kenton County track are Hearing completion, the grandstand being almost finished. The work on the betting ring will be finished by the end of the week. Eugene EIrod was able to be at the track today and take up his duties as supervisor of the betting ring. He is showing decided traces of his illness and has fallen off twenty-six pounds in weight during the last month. Saturdays volume of speculation In the Lexington ring broke all local records, aggregating 1911.sh1.-500, of which only about 5S.O0O was handled through the auction pools. The meetings has been so successful that the profits may be sufficient to wipe out the indebtedness which has been hanging over the association for years. There is talk of the improvement of the plant by the enlargement of the betting ring and increasing the capacity of the grandstand for next falls meeting. II. P. Headleys Kentucky Derby candidate. .Tabot, worked a mile and an eighth yesterday in 1:51, going the first three-quarters in 1:12 ami the mile iu 1:40;. He was a tired horse at the finish.
