LOUISVILLE CHOICES FAIL FAVORITES CUT LITTLE FIGURE IN AFTER-NOONS RESULTS AT CHURCHILL DOWNS. Contenders at Liberal Odds Monopolize the Places in Several Races — Carman Stable Furnishes Three of the Unsuccessful Choices. Louisville, Ky., May 10. — The followers of favorites had an unprofitable afternoon of it at Churchill Downs. Especially was it ilisaslrcus lor those with a penchant for big investments and small returns on iitsianiling contenders seemingly witli a Mortgage .•n a portion of tie- purses. In four of the racei the iiist an 1 second choices landed out of the inoney-and their failures swelled the prices about the placed ones to a considerable degree. Two extreme outsiders were BBSOBg tie- winners. The .11111.111 stable played a conspicuous part in the woes of the public by furnishing three of the disappointing favorites. They wen- Sir Alveaeot, Cohort and Sir Cleges. The lirst named begin the days upsets when he failed to be a serious facior on .11 nut of sulking. His mean traits cropped I immediately alter tin- start, when he palled up ui his own accord. Cohort, considered the best betting proposition of the aftcrin~.ii. carried the large 1 stable rommisaios of the season. He flattered his supporters for the tirst half mile by Staying I to tile s] ly .lulm Ctillin II., but weakened unexpectedly in the last furlong and ultimately failed by a small margin to gel third money. Sir L-like Cohort, seessed a certain winner in the stretch, but succumbed in the tinal drive. Another jolt that the form players received during the afternoon casne in the second race when Praetorian was left at the post and Miss Wiggs got oti so pearly as to pre elude any possibility of her flnlfthlnf, among the tirst three. Aside from the defeats of the favorites, the racing was interesting an. I the lintshes close. Flying Footsteps and Sun-got fought it out desperately in the opener, the Mackenzie nlly getting the verdict in the 1 1 11 ■ I stride. County Tax, favored by a light Impost, remained within Striking distance of John Ctillin II. and Cohort until the stretch turn was reached, where he sued much ground and. under urging, gained steadily to win by a scant length, the showing of J,. Iin ilrillin II. in this race, consid ering it was his tirst start in a long time, was meritorious. Yanker. Pliant and Sidon had a battle royal in the tilth an. I finished in that order, with Mary Kmily behlnd the trio. Yanker surprised even his owner. WHO neglected to have a wager on him. He was lucky at that. for. with stronger handling, both Pliant and Sidon would have beaten him. Mary Emily, the top heavy favorite in the race, suftorcil much from Interference, which accounted for her poor performance. The Schorr stable scored in the closing dash, when Wander outstayed Sir leges in a sharp drive. Only tour started in the handicap, which featured the card, and it proved little more than a FOSSS for ozana. which bear Princelike by two lengths. The Gallaber Bllj slight have had more serioas onsMSt-tioa for the purse but for Leassence running awaj for three-quarters of a mile before tin- start. Hen dels. .11 , e Hegana Cuaranola niadc a runaway affair of the sec, .mi race from a fast start. Failure of the respective owners of Meridian and Governor Cray to come to an understanding regard tag conditions to prevail in the proposed special race lias forced Manager Winn to withdraw his offer of a purse for the pair, but he will arrange I handicap race for three-year-olds for which he will offer a tempting parse. Meridian and Governor Gray can go in it and owners of other three year olds w 1 I likely take a chance if the weight adjustments suit. II. R.
