Originally it was a st ike race for three ai olds and as such a seouel to tin- Kentucky Derby and called the Chirk Stakes. The Derby, as now, was the feature of the tirst day of each meeting and the Clark Stakes Was tin- star attraction of the last day. the distance being two miles, while the Derby was a mile and a half. In these ibns owners did ten object to running their three year-olds over such distances and the horses stood the strain just as well as they now do contests over the shorter distances in VOgne. The distance was opt down to a mile and a quarter in IsSl and in 1!MI2 the evenl was made a handicap for three year olds and over.
