+ »$. CAN/IDAS MOST SOLICITOUSLY COVETED ANNUAL RACE * ■ ■ 4. The Kings Plate is the chief event of the Toronto spring meeting and of the Canadian turf as well. Furthermore it is the oldest annual race of the American turf, having tirst neea run in 1800 as the Queens Plate and contested each yea ShKe that far away date. In its earlier days its prize was only Mi., tifty guineas, donated by the reigning sovereign of England, but at the present time and for a number of years past the Ontsrlo Jockey club has supplemented this subvention with an addition of money, so liberal as to make it by far the, richest prise of the turf for Canadian-bred horses exclusively. Historical sssociations, the sentiment of loyalty to Englands monarch and the constantly growing fashionable popularity of tie event serve to make it the must keenly coveted race of each year across the border and proud and happy is the Canadian owner to whom is vouchsafed the honor of possessing a Kings Mate winner.
