LAT0NIA DERBY LOOMS IMPORTANTLY. Kentucky Bace-Goers Looking: Forward to a Notable Contest on Opening Day at Covington. Cincinnati. O., May 10. — Although it is three weeks In tort. tin. opening of Latouia ragbag, turfmen and the followers of racing hereabouts are ul-rcad looking forward In the running of the Derby. La tenias stellar faults, and its bringing together of the luminaries of the three year old division. The winner of this years event will rightfully be entitled to premier anion; the three , oar olds, for he will meet with opposition from the best of bis age in training. The distance, a mile and a half, the true Derby route, will oiler a splendid test of the win mis ability and prowess and should settle the question of superiority. The 1. ato iiia lixture. with its extended distance, will give Meridian and Governor Gray the opportunity lor a meeting that will afford the respective supporters of these racers a true line on their relative abilities. Governor Gray triumphed over his rival in the Blue Grass Stakes, but Meridian reversed the running in his next meeting with Governor Gray in the Kentucky Derby. The supporters of Governor Gray wile not convinced of the eastern colts superiority in that race, attributing Governor Grays ; failure to the manner in which he was ridden by Troxier. Governor Grays admirers figure that the added distance -of the Latouia Derby will l e in his favor. R. F. Carman, Meridians owner, smiles knowingly when this is mentioned, but once when nettled, he retorted: ••.Meridian can beat Governor Cray at an eighth of a mile or from here to California."
