TRAINERS BEGIN 10 TIGHTEN UP. Some Sharp Work Reported at Louisville Tracks Tommic Thompson Goes Fast Quarter. Louisville, Ky., August Si. A number of horses were worked sharply :it the two local tracks yester-ilay. quarters being run in -4 and 25. and three-eighths in ;!8 and .!9. The fastest work So far at Churchill Downs stands to the credit of L. P. Doer-hoofers good two-year-old, Tomniie Tlioiupsou. which ; Ieep oDay went a quarter in Trainer 1 . is sweet on this colt and his future prospects Ef result in the Doerhoefer stable nof participating ! inter racing. The youngster is eligible to the ueky Derby of next year and on this account the big stable of the Louisville turfman may winter at the home track. Owner Doerhoefer has left the decision with trainer West, and if, when fall nutoi: hi Kentucky is over this year, Tommie TliViison has shown to lie of Derby caliber, the string will winter at the Downs. If the Doerhoefer horses participate in racing the coming winter, the stable will be raced at Juarez. Another racer that attracted much attention as she went along at the Downs yesterday was Round the World. This sensational lilly appeared to be rank and was never more eager and anxious to run. She lias tilled out considerably since coming here from Latonia. A maiority of the horsemen at Churchill Downs look for her to race better this fall than ever. Among others out yesterday for sharp work were Quartermaster, Mockler, Koyal Report, .Mary Davis, linkola. The Hague. Harrigan, Robert, Angelus, Tillies Nightmare. The lteach. Archduke, Jim Gaff-nev. Cash on Delivery, Plutocrat and ISettie Sue. W. S. Hopkins has begun training three yearling fillies owned by the Louisville turfman, D. Meschen-dorf. One is a chestnut by Hermis Desayuuo, by Wisdom; another is a chestnut by Electioneer Ambrosia, by Hanover, and the Other is a bay by Cedarstrome Hull Down, by Candlemas. Mr. Meschendorf also has four yearling colts that will not be broken, but will be disposed of the coming fall at public sale. Mr. Teschendorf has no yearling this season out of Voltario. She, however, has a good-looking weanling bay colt by Sir Wilfred. Superintendent Keegan has finished the widening of the track boulevard near where the old clubhouse stood at Churchill Downs, and it lias much improved the appearance of that part of the grounds. The now carpenter shop which will soon be erected will be nu the pavement liile on Fourth avenue, and the stable for the work horses used on the track will be built immediately behind this structure. Yesterday the line fence was torn down at this point, and work on the new building will begin at once. The horses of the Louisville turfman, W. F. Schulto, look as well as those of any stable in training at Churchill Downs. Trainer Brooks has taken up the vearlings and now has eight horses to care for. The two-year-old Captain Bravo is now en-tirelv over the sickness which attacked him at Latonia and is taking daily training. King Olympian and the evergreen Zienap never looked better. The Schulte vearlings, which have just been turned over to trainer Brooks, are live in number. Two are by Batts and the others are by Sir Iluon, Alvescot and Scnipronius. There is always interest in any yearlings bred bv the former president of the New Louisville Jockey Club, as his Argyle Farm has turned out some good horses, including the high-class mare Alleviate, which in the stud produced Zienap. Another noted performer bred there was the Latonia and Tennessee Oaks winner. Flora Pomona, which was out of his famous broodmare, Fanny Willoughby, also the dam o Batts and Lilita.
