BEST WORK OF SEASON AT LOUISVILLE. Candidates for St. Leger Handicap Figure, in Fast Trials " at Churchill Downs. Louisville, Ky., September 22. The track was fast at Churchill Downs this morning and, as a consequence, the best works of the season took place. Adams Express, one of H. C. Hallenbecks candidates for the St. Leger Handicap, to be run on the opening day next Monday, went a mile in 1:41. He ran. the first eighth in 12, the quarter in 24, three-eighths in 36s. half in 4SJ, five-eighths in 1:02. three-quarters in 1:151. and seven-eighths in l:28i. He worked by himself and finished strongly. J. R. Wainwrights candidate for the same event, High Private, did the mile In 1:42?, running the hrst quarter in 24. three-eighths in 30, half in 49, live-eighths in 1:02, three-quarters in 1:15s, and seven-eighths in 1:20. Other probable starters in this event worked as follows: Herkimer Seven-eighths in 1:29; fractionals- 12 232, 30, 4Sg, 1:00$, 1:13. Knight Deck Mile In 1:4G1, easily. Stinger Three -quarters in 1:13?; fractionals: 24, 47g, 1:01. Worth Three-quarters in 1:15. Fractionals, 121, 24. 30J, 4SJ, 1:01; was eased In the last furlong. The work was also good today at Douglas Park, but the time was not as fast in any of the performances as was recorded by the horses at Churchill Downs. J. T. Ireland reached the Downs today from Lexington with his string, including Cherryola, his candidate for the Kentucky Endurance Stakes, four miles, to lie run here on Saturday, October 7. He brought six others with him, including Marsand, Ethel Wicks, Miss Miller, Jack Wainwright. The Stein and Tommy Twig. With him came Dilatory and Robert, owned by C. C. Van Meter. The latter was shipped from Douglas Park last week, but owing to track conditions at Lexington, was not raced there. O. A. Bianchi shipped today to Toronto the gelding Presumption, which he is training for James McManus. to run in two two-year-old stakes to be decided there next Monday and the following Saturday. The first is at three-quarters of a mile and the other at one mile. The son of Golden Maxim will be returned to the Downs as soon as the Toronto meeting is over, to fill his engagement here in the Iroquois Stakes to bo run on the closing day of the meeting at the Itowns, Saturday. Octoler 14. John Hachmoistor, manager of the La ton! a track, arrived today to remain throughout the coming meeting. He reports that the prospects are bright for the most successful autumn meeting this fall In the history of the Latonia track. Another arrival is M. J. Shannon, who will officiate here as an assistant to Acting Secretary Jasper and also as assistant paddock judge. James Griimi reached Douglas Park -today from Lexington with Fairy Story and Chartier, which he took there to race. He also brought iu two yearlings, a Silverman colt and another youngster uy Hippodrome. The Superman colt is a half brother to Hanbridge. Barney Schreiber wired Manager M. J. Winn for eleven stalls. It is presumed the horses he will send hero will come from Canada, and will include among the number the great performer, Jack Atkin. K. F. Carman corrects the statement sent out that lie had donated his noted horse, Magazine, to the Canadian Breeding Bureau. This fast horse is still in training here with the Carman string at Douglas Park, and lie may decide to reserve him for the private thoroughbred stud that he now has in contemplation.
