CANADIAN CIRCUIT CLOSES END OF REGULAR SEASON AT WOODBINE MARKED BY BRILLIANT GATHERING. Farewell Reception to Earl Grey, Retiring- Governor General of Canada, a Feature Sotemia Wins Ontario Jockey Club Cup. Toronto, Out., September 30. The Ontario Jockey Club today closed the regular Canadian racing season. There was a tremendous crowd at Woodbine and the presence of His Excellency the Governor Gcueral,. Earl Grey, who was the guest of the club at a farewell luncheon, was responsible for a large clubhouse gathering. The Ontario Jockey Cluo provided for the occasion one of the best programs ever run over the Woodbine course. Four of the seven races were stakes, and in only one of the races was the distance less than a mile. In the Durham Cup, the Held was asked to go a mile and three-quarters, in the Ontario Jockey Club Cup they went two miles and a quarter, and in the Hendrie Steeplechase three miles. Despite the muddy track, splendid contests resulted, and a majority of the finishes were close enough to arouse great enthusiasm. Mr. Shetlands Prince Hampton beat Bello a neck in the Hendrie Steeplechase, while Sotemia had to be ridden hard through the homestretch to win the two mile and a quarter race by a length and a half from My Gal. The Valley Farm Stable sent three to the post in the Durham Cup, and Denham made a runaway race of it, beating Powdennan, his stablemate, three lengths. Commola, the other one of the Valley Farm Stable entry, was beaten a head for third place. The cup was presented to Colonel Hendrie by Colonel Lambton. brother of Lord Durham and commander of a battalion of the Coldstream guards. The tabled history of the Durham Cup, first raced for in 1000. is as follows: Year. Winner. A.AVt. Jockey. Val. Time. 100 Inferno .", 4 131 C. Penobscot again showed brilliant form. He went along behind Frog-legs to the stretch turn, where he moved to the front without much efTort and assumed an easy lead. At the finish. Dig-ins was forced to take Penobscot under a strong pull to let Aldebaran win. On his showing in his last two races, Penobscot looks th-; best two-yearrold of the season, at least in this part of the country. A meeting between him and some of the western cracks would settle the question of supremacy. The Grey Stakes was first run in 1000, and its history follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Lyucii took him back after mailing one turn of the field and waited until the last half mile before making his move. He wore down the tiring Bello at the finish and caught her at the last fence.- Kermath made his move too soon with Bello, or she might have won. Sotemia had to be hard ridden through the homestretch to beat My Gal a length and a half in the Ontario Jockey Club Cup. Montgomery started out like a winner by opening up a lead of a dozen lengths the first half mile, but quit after they had gone a mile and a quarter, and was beaten off at the end.
