SPELLBOUND began quickly and, going to the front with a rush while rounding the far turn, drew away Into an early lead in the last quarter. OWANUX kept sprawling for the first quarter and had to be hard ridden on the stretch turn to overhaul LADY ORIMAR, but finished fast. The latter showed the most speed for a half mile, then tired. POWDERMAN moved up gamely after entering the homestretch, but euold not get to the lender. FROLIC ran well, but was tiring at the end and just lasted long enough to outstay COMMOLA for third place. PENOBSCOT was never fully extended and was under sharp restraint at the end. FROGLEGS set the pace to the stretch and finished gamely under punishment. The latter stayed unexpectedly well and moved up menacingly while rounding the turn into the homestretch and was slowly wearing the leader down at the end. BOB R. quit after making a threatening challenge at the furlong post. AYLMER and SUPERVISOR quit. MONTGOMERY quit or sulked after setting the pace for nearly two miles.
