BIG FIELDS FOR LAUREL OPENING. Twenty-Two Accept Weights in Stake Feature for Inaugural Day at New Track, Baltimore, Md.. September 30. Everything is ready for the opening of the inaugural meeting of the Maryland State Fair Association at Laurel on Monday. The track and plant have been put in a condition to race over, while the buildings are all finished. Nothing lias been let undone to make the opening oiie to be long remembered, not only by the horsemen, but by the public generally. The card arranged for the opening has as its feature the Maryland State Fair Inaugural Handicap, with ,500 added, one of the most valuable stakes -decided in Maryland for a long time past. There are twenty-two acceptances of the weights in this event, all of them leing bona fide. This is remarkable, a almost half of the original entry list .have accepted the weights. The Hildreth stable has named three, while the Ilevcrwyck Stable has named two, as has the Schorr stable. James Itowe will be represented by Lahore, which came here in charge of W. A. Burttschell. This colt will be coupled with Question Mark because of being handled by the trainer of the last-named horse. The other events have filled liberally with the exception of the opening dash of live and a half furlongs, which has only half a dozen named as contestants. The others range in number from ten to seventeen, there being that many in the fifth race. This, without exception, is one of the largest entry lists that has ever been sent out from this part of the country and the best part of it is that the races are not padded in any way. The horses named are all on the grounds or will be here by Monday and it is safe to say that the majority of them will answer the call to the post. The track is in a wonderfully improved condition, having been harrowed and rolled continually since a light rain on Thursday. The rain beat down the top dressing and made it faster than it had been at any time. The majority of the horses at the course were worked over it and Sunday will bo a busy day for the railbirds. Algernon Daingerfield will be among the visitors at the track in the afternoon and will remain over to see some racing on Monday. Among the horses that arrived at the track yesterday morning were those of Capt. P. M. AValker. accompanied by jockey Byrne, A. R. Bressler, Thomas H. Condran, E. F. Condran, Frank Regan; part of the string trained by Albert Simons, the horses of James Itowe, M. Myers, C. S. Orrison, James Tighe, C. Piunkett and a number of mixed stables. These horses will be followed by the remainder of those that remained over to racjp at Toronto on the closing day. Part of the string trained by William Garth is here, while the others will follow, leaving Toronto tonight. The entries for the Anuapolis. Handicap, three-quarters of a mile for three-year-olds and over, to be run on October 31, the closing day of the meeting, gives a good idea of the caliber of the sprinters that will engage in the racing here.
