MESSENGER BOY TAKES CUP EUGENE LUTZ THREE -YEAR -OLD WINS FASTEST FOUR-MILE RACE ON RECORD. Nadzii, Top "Weight and Favorite of Kentucky Endurance Stakes, Keeps Victor Close Company Until Record Breaking Contest Nears End. Louisville, Ky., October 7. Eugene Lutz three-year old. Messenger Boy, accomplished today what jk other racer of his years lias been able to do in the last decade, namely, score at four miles -over older opposition. lie triumphed in splendid fashion in the nnich-coveted Kentucky Endurance Stakes over Nadzu and Royal Report, and also established a new American record for the distance when he came home in 7:14. Lucretia Borgia, against time, made a mark of 7:11 with pacemakers, but never has Messenger Boys time been approached in actual con-lest. The race was a splendid spectacle between Messenger Boy and Nadzu for the last two miles. Irevlous to this. Royal Report had essayed the role of pacemaker and Uattered the hopes of his backers, liis lead, however, was only on sufferance, as Messenger Hoy and Nadzu left him with, apparent ease at their riders call. Messenger Boy Hashed into the lead passing the second mile, but Molesworth, his rider, did not iu-1end to cut out the pace and, taking a restraining hold, contented himself with staying close to Nadzu, which had taken the role of leader. Close order was maintained by the pair until the last half mile, when it became apparent that Nadzu was weakening and the younger horse, though himself tiring, overhauled the Bedwell representative in easy fashion and ultimately drew out to win by "eight lengths. Royal Report faltered badiy in the last mile and brought up a full furlong behind Nadzu. Aylihcr, lie only other starter, broke down after going two jul a half miles and was dismounted. The net V of the stake to the winncrwas -,780 and a gold cU donated by the Kentucky State Racing Commission worth ,000. Nadzu!si share was ,180 and Royal Reports 80, the latter two taking respectively twenty per cent, and ten per cent, of the ,900 purse. Unmindful of the cold and threatening weather, an immense attendance, second only in size to that of Derby day, was at the Downs, eager to witness the four-mile racing. There was a predominance of old timers, among them some who had not been to a race course in ten years. To them the Endurance .Stakes recalled racing of old. They lived in the past and told and retold of the struggles of Ten Broeck, Mollie McCarthy, Gray Eagle, Lexington, Lecompte and other racing veterans of over thirty years ago. They mentioned the names of the racers reverently and again recalled the- time when they were all assembled at the same track to witness the now historic race lietween Ten Broeck and Mollie McCarthy. Going back thirty-three years was as nothing to them. They spoke of It as if the match had taken place yesterday. The younger generation listened to the old-timers with respectful attention, but intent on picking the winner. To them the vital question was whether Nadzu would be able to pack 124 pounds over the trying route or would he succumb to his younger and lighter-weighted rivals; Royal Report and Aylmer never entered seriously into calculations. To the more experienced horsemen, as well as nice followers generally, Nadzu loomed as the one most likely to pull down the plum. It was known that he had been given a thorough preparation for the race, wb.il; a doubt as to Messenger Boys fituess to go four miles was expressed. It was also argued that it was against precedent for a three-year-old to succeed at the distance over an older horse. The human side cropped out during the running of the race and sympathy was all for Messenger Boy in tilt; last mile and a half. When it became apparent that lie would win the cheers of the spectators .grew in volume. To the owner, the stakes took on I in- proportion of a fortune. It was common rumor before the race that ho had to borrow the 50 starting fee. Mr. Lutz confidence in his horses prowess was suiierb. To those who asked him while in the paddock he had the same answer. "I expect to win by about an eighth of a mile, mid if it is necessary Messenger Boy will run the Join- miles in 7:12." lie was all smiles after the finish and choked with emotion when George J. Long, representing the Kentucky State Racing Commission, tendered him the gold cup. lie found voice to ospress thanks to Mr. Long and immediately rushed siway to superintend the cooling out of his horse. The other races were overshadowed by the Endurance Stakes, the tirst three only serving to whet the appetites of the spectators. The ceremonies attending the finish of the four mile race made it rather late and additional time was wasted in the lifth race by the runaway of Rliasneth, making it :iImost totally dark for the decision of the closing number. It was impossible to distinguish colors in it on account of the darkness. Governor Willson of Kentucky was among todays distinguished visitors. Messrs. Long. Clay and Camden of the Kentucky State Racing Commission were iiis fellow-guests of Charles F. Grainger, at a luncheon given this morning at the 1endennis Club. Geo. J. Long, J. N. Camden. Catcsby Woodford and Frank II. Brunell witnessed the running of the Endurance Stakes from the judges stand. The program liook of the Latonia Jockey Club was distributed among the horsemen this afternoon and met with general favor.
