LAWTON WIGGINS IN GREAT FORM. Burttschell Racer Wins Another Stake at Laurel Layers Have Profitable Day. Laurel,- Md., October 7. Although the opening of the. Maryland Jockey Clubs meeting at the Pimlico track, this afternoon, no doubt took many of the regulars away from Laurel, and the weather was anything but inviting, as rain fell until after the time for making the trip to the track, the crowd that vis ited the track was surprisingly large. The course was made heavy and slippery by the rain, and this caused some withdrawals. The stake attraction for the day was the Baltimore Handicap, for three-year-olds and over at one mile and a sixteenth, and J. W. Burttschell furnished the winner In Lawton Wiggins, winner of the Inaugural Handicap on the opening day of the meeting. Plate Glass ruled favorite and, notwithstanding that he had top weight of 127 pounds, was the best backed horse in the race. Plate Glass was on his bad behavior when he reached the gate and starter Murray gave the boys the signal to break, Plate Glass propped and was . left standing at the post. Sir John Johnson and Lawton Wiggins had the race between them for six furlongs, when the first named quit and Lawton Wiggins moved into a two-lengths lead, which he thereafter held. Joseph McLennan received word today from George M. Hendrie that the contract had been awarded for the new grandstand that will be erected at the Windsor track in Canada. Seventeen books drew in and they must have had a profitable day of it, as most of the choices failed. Starter William Murray sent the fields away today, ia plnce of A. B. Dade, who officiated at Pimlico.
