VETERAN OF THE TURF IS RETIRED. E. It. Bradley, according to advices from Louisville, has retired his famous old campaigner, Bad News. The horse has been sent to Idle Hour Farm, near Lexington, where he will end his days in ease, a pensioner on the Iwunty of his owner. Mr. Bradley says he will never sell the old horse nor permit h Iiii to be used as a drudge, as he appreciates what the gelding did on the turf in his colors and entertains a genuine affection for the old fellow. Few better examples of a good horse retaining his speed to old age, as the age of a race horse goes, exists on the American turf than that of Bad News. This eleven-year-old gelding has been a veritable gidd mine to E. K. Bradley. Beginning his career in liiOH as the property of Woodford and Buckner, his racing as a two-year-old was done for them. lie also raced as their property for a part of the following year and as such ran sixth in the American Derby, "won bv The licket. thirteen aspirants to the honors of that great race finishing behind him. He won two purses for them at that meeting and iva sold July Hi. 1903, to E. It. Bradley for ,r.0, and has remained his property ever since. For him he ran unplaced in the Wheeler Handicap, but later on in the vear began to pay for himself by winning the Dixiana Stakes at Morris Fark and the Cincinnati Hotel Handicap at Latonia. Ho also won a purse at Brighton Beach, In which he defated such celebrities as Colonel Bill. Lord Badge and Molly Brant. In the Cincinnati Hotel Handicap he ran a mile and an eighth in such good time as 1:521 with 110 pounds up. His best year was in 1001. when a four-year-old. Besides twelve purses ho won the Columbia Handicap at Worth in which, with 12:1 pounds up, lie-defeated hraneas, 103; Miss Crawford. 112; Reservation, 110; Fonsoluca, OS; Prince Silvcrwings, 102, and Port Royal, 105, and ran the mile and a quarter in 2:00. One of his best races that year was in the Saratoga Handicap, when, with 10S pounds up. he ran second to Lord of the Vale. The latter carried 112 pounds and ran the mile and a quarter in 2:0:;. Every year since Bail News has won races for his owner, mainly purses, but took the Election Day Handicap at Aqueduct in 1005, King Cotton Handicap at Citv Park. New Orleans, in 1000. and the Nautilus Stakes at Brighton Beach in 1007. In the latter he ran a mile and u sixteenth in such fast time as 1:44.
