PURSE FOR PRESUMPTION MACMANUS JUVENILE SCORES OVER LADY LIGHTNING BY SMALL MARGIN. Churchill Downs Track Remains in Condition Suitable for Mud Runners Pat Dunne to Retire from Racing to Engage in Business. Louisville, Ky., October 11. Track conditions to day were about on a par with yesterday and especially suited to tried mud racers. In consequence, the fields were small, but the limited number of .--tarters hi each o the races contributed to enjoyable sport. Liberal prices prevailed against all the winners and those lucky to pick them profited handsomely. Upsets were rare, only one outsider winning. This happened in the closing race, when Fal-catla scored over The Hague and Tom Bigbee, with Jim Gaffney, the favorite, far in the rear. The only race on the card without selling conditions was the lifth, lu which Presumption and Lady Lightning were among the starters. The pair towered over their opposition and fought it out for first money from the start. Presumption won by a neck. Lady Lightning might have reversed the outcome with a stronger ride. T. AV. Flynn suffered a serious loss in the second race when his filly Starry Night was badly cut down. The filly was the medium of an extensive betting coup and she seemed about to make good, when Bouncer, which she displaced from the lead on the stretch turn, jumped on her hind legs and cut a deep gash in her left hind tendon. The mishap threw her out of the running and Mockler was enabled to land the purse in a tight fit with Edna Collins. Hut for the mishap, Starry Night probably would have been an easy victor. An effort will be made to wive her for further racing. Harry McDaniel, acting for E. Gaylord, owner of Anion, has protested the payment of second money to Pendant for the third race on October 0. McDaniel based his protest on the fact that Pendant was not entitled to the allowances her owner claimed, as she had won three races at Knoxvillc, Tcitn., during the recent fair held there. The judges allowed the protest and awarded second money to Anion and gave third money to Bonne Chance. There was a Tumor today that the -popular owner, P. Dunne, would shortly retire from the turf for good and engage in the contracting business with , headquarters in Kansas City. Mr. Dunnes retire kluent is genuinely regretted and will lie a distinct "Joss to the turf. The limited opportunities for rae-1 lug and the excessive cost of maintaining a stable are said to be the reasons for Mr. Dunnes retirement. T. AV. Flynu has reconsidered his determination to go to Mexico City, and will ship his stable to La-teuia, where he will later dispose of all his horses and quit the turf. Captain James Jacobs has been re-engaged by John Ilachmelstcr to supervise the police arrangements at Latonia track. The Kentucky Endurance Stakes winner. Messenger Boy, is again taking his exercise, and seems none the worse for his long-distance struggle. Eugene Elrod has arranged for a special train to leave here for Latonia Saturday night at S oclock. Most of the owners, trainers, jockeys and race followers will leave on it. The machines and other mutuel betting equipment will be taken on the-frain and unloaded at Latonia. Harry Morrisey left today for Philadelphia, to do Hie starting at the ltose Tree Hunt Club meeting, October 14 to 1C. He will return to Latonia and assist starter Cassidy for a week before going on to Mexico City, where he will serve as starter. Al Luzader will take Sigurd, Lucky Mose and two two-year-olds to Mexico City next week. Herman Itrandt is another owner who has decided to try Mexico City. He will take a strong string there with him. including Angelus, Harrigan, Cash on Do livery and The Iteach. Lon Johnson has had to fire his two-year-old Pard-ner and the youngster is out of training until spring. The Missouri turfman is anxious to buy another good horse or two, and he will try to pick up one or twa at Latonia. If he can get the right material he will do some racing at Juarez the coming winter, but if the close of Latonia finds him still possessing only Carlton G. and Parduer, he will stay during the cold weather in Kentucky, wintering cither at Douglas Park or Churchill Downs. George Land reports that Royal Report came out of the Kentucky Endurance Stakes in a broken down condition. The sou of Requital had been on the ailing list before, so his going wrong cannot be wholly attributed to this race. Mr. Land hoies after a long rest and letup to patch up Royal Report that he will race again. He will winter him here and make no effort to again train him until next summer. Secretary Jasper this afternoon announced the weights for the Iroquois Handicap to be run on Saturday next. Worth is given top weight of 12S pounds. Sprite follows with 3120 and next in order ome Sonada, 11S. Presumption, 117. Anion, 117, Kaiser. 115. Oakland and Cash on Delivery, 115, - Lady Lightning, 114, Froglegs, 113 and Azyiarie. 110.
