BEDWELL WINS STAKE AT LAUREL. Sticker Makes Good at First Asking in the East Selling Race Activities. Laurel, October 11. The rain of last night spoiled the best card that had been arranged since the opening of the meeting at Laurel, for it made the going a trifle heavy and naturally there wore many absentees during the afternoon. Good sport was witnessed by the large crowd that made the trip from Baltimore and AVashington. II. G. Bedwcll, whose horses reached here only a few days ago. began iu good style by capturing the Hopkins. Selling Stakes with Sticker. The race, which was worth 2,040 net lo the winner, was reduced to seven starters. Donald Macdonald was made the public choice, but he was not a contender at any stage of the race, being among the tail enders all the way. Sticker got away well, opened a gap and the others never could catch her. John Reardou ran in second place to the last furlong, where Helene joined him and in a hard stretch drive the filly got up in time to receive second money by a short head. The colors of F. H. Milden were prominent during the the afternoon, as he won races with Idleweiss and Husky Lad and was second in the stake with Helene. But on Idleweiss ho was forced to stand a hid. for J. AV. Hedrick boosted the horse and it cost Mr. Milden 05 to retain him. AV. C. Capps. owner of Love AAatehes, was also a victim of the selling race activities, as Love AVatches was bid up to ,005. There was to have been a novelty race on the program today, in which horses, men and automobiles were to have con-peted, but owing to the condition of the track the race was deferred until Friday or such time as the track is In condition for it. The backers of Madrigalian were fortunate to cash, for on the way to the post the colt unseated Byrne. As the mishap occurred near the starting point, the starters assistants managed to catch the colt after he had gone a sixteenth of a mile. Madrigalian then took part in the r.e, which he won easily. There were many new arrivals today, including Jack Atkiii and other horses owned by Barney Schreiber. T. Ryan came with Twenty-One, Clay, Charley Brown and Lady Hughes from Dufferln Park. AA". O. Scully brought the Mulholland horses from Toronto. T. AVilson will bring over his jumper Numerator from Pimlieo tomorrow to take part in the Chevy Chase steeplechase. The horses of.AV. P. Austin have been turned over to Hugh Penny, who will train them iu future. The new bookmakers that went on today were: George Howard, Al Hanf, George Cafferata. C. .T. Odell, C. AVolfgang and 1. H. AVard. The drawing today was for two days, instead of one as has been the custom since the meeting opened. Jockey M. Bell, who went to Pimlieo to ride yesterday, returned here this afternoon.
