LATONIA OPENING PLEASING PATRONAGE REMARKABLY GOOD IN SPITE OF INAUSPICIOUS WEATHER. Cherryola Duplicates Her Last Years Winning Performance in the Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap Rain Causes Many Withdrawals. Cincinnati, O., October 10. Latonias twenty-four-days session of racing was inaugurated this afternoon with a really big attendance, considering the iiiijiropi t ions state of the weather. It threatened rain before race tinii, and during the afternoon intermittent showers developed. The track, contrary lo expectations, Iwrdered on fast and creditable time was recorded in most of the races. Anticipating a heavy track, most of the races were riddled by withdrawals and a six-furlongs race was substituted for the original closing dash. The Latonia Autumn Inaugural Handicap, which featured the card, guttered nine withdrawals, but It furnished a brilliant struggle, in which Cherryola, its winner of last year, scored by a neck over High Private,, the top weight, after a furious final furlong drive. Stinger also showed to advantage in the race and finished a head behind High Private. A good deal of interest centered in the meeting of Sprite and Presumption and the contest between them aroused considerable enthusiasm. The filly scored in the last stride, but she showed herself to be decidely best, for she was away last, while Presumption had a considerable advantage at the start. She wore him down steadily, although forced to go wide on the stretch turn. Little Fathers performance in the sprint handicap was also a good one, as he won with much in reserve. The showing of Grovcr Hughes in this race was in decided contrast to his last lxmisville performance and some attributed it to his being bandaged all around in todays race. Azyiade scored in the opener and Silver Kuight continued his winning streak by taking the fifth race in handy style. Camel proved the surprise of the dav when he won the substitute race from Al Midler and John Griffin II. There- was hardly any inconvenience today to the newspaper men serving afternoon papers. The iu-. Sanation of a branch telegraph olllce opposite the JkiiMin gate expedited the sending of the news matter. l!e present system only "tends, to more forcibly ox-" finpliry the uselessness of the wire rulcaud tlie Kentucky State Hacing Commission will likely order the wires restored within the next few days. Secretary Johnston of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, who was among todays visitors, announced that there would be a meeting of the commission on Saturday next, at which time the wire matter -would probably be adjusted. Congressman Arthur II. Rouse, formerly secretary of the Kentucky State Racing Commission, was also simong todays visitors. General Manager John Ilachnioister expressed himself as highly pleased with conditions attending todays opening and feels sanguine that the present meeting will be successful. Capt. C. A. Tilles, who holds the controlling interest in this track, entertained a party of friends iind expressed himself as satislied over the success attending the opening. He probably will remain for the rest of the week. Trainer Karriek is desirous of tackling Worth with Sprite, and announces that the lilly can take the colts measure at a slight weight difference. Malinger Hachmeister is willing to add a liberal amount to a sweepstakes that will bring four or five of the best two-year-olds together. Messrs. Knapp aud llallenbeck could then bet ,000 as a side stake on the outcome between the colt and Ally. Worth is slated to le shipped to Laurel within the next few lavs to run in a mile stake. The attachment against E. C. Cowdins Swannanoa hv George Odom has been adjusted by Mr. Cowdin paying the former jockey , the amount claimed Jo "be due. Jockey Ganz was suspended for five days by the starter for disobedience at the post. J. W.
