Improving conditions J contluue at Latonia and another large attendance , was on hand this afternoon to witness the sport. : The track had dried out considerably, but it was . still a trltle slow, though improving rapidly during the afternoon. The presence "of 1resmnption in the original fourth race caused some of the others to decline the issue and as only Ave starters were sent . out in the overnight entries, the lnanagment deemed a , it best to declare the race off and substitute another. The new race was at three-quarters ami engaged a fairly useful band of sprinters .including Prince Gal. , He proved the worst disappointment of the afternoon. Hacked to the exclusion of nearly all the others, he wound up in fourth place, Kthelda, Conip-ton and Donau leading him in the order named. , Prince Gal was much the best, but suffered repeated , interference in the lirst half mile and was held in , a pocket during the stretch drive. 1avontes and second choices accounted .for all the other purses , and those with :i ienehaut for short-priced contenders , Tared excellently. Most of the finishes were again , close and exciting. i The match between Worth. and Sprite oontinucs to Iks an absorbing topic among horsemen. Doubt as to its materialization was dispelled this morning on , receipt of a telegram by General Manager John Ilaehmeister from II. K. Knapp announcing that he had mailed last "night a certified check for the full amount of the stakes. The consensus of opinion is that the. match will be a rattling good contest, . with jockeyshlp an important factor. There was a rumor that trainer Taylor would try to obtain the services of C. II. Shilling to pilot Worth, but this seems to be unfounded, from the fact that jockey. Kennedy today signed a contract with the Halleii-beck stable for the remainder of the. Latonia meet- ing. His retainer is 00. Trainer Karrick is con- . tident that his" filly .will take Worths measure and, has engaged jockey Ganz to pilot her in the-match. Messrs. Knapp and Hitchcock will bring a party of easterners here Monday to witness the running of i the match. Mr. Halleubeck intends to ship Worth : after the match to Laurel, where lie is slated to meet souie crack juveniles in " a stake to be, run next Silt- : urday. J. W. Mays seven racers, including Countless, arrived todav "from Pimlico. Amos Turnoys six racers came with the same consignment. Mr. May reports that"" lwtli the Maryland courses are attracting big crowds and are dividing the patronage. lie expects La,urel tff have a remarkable session after the close at Piinllco. Jockey McTaggart, who arrived today from Baltimore, will do most of the ridiug for Mr. May. Jockev Taplins engagements here will be made by W. M. "Wallace. Trainer Adkins is at present superintending the placing of the Mackenzie racers in winter, quarters at Lexington. He disposed of Fort Johnson yester-dav at Louisville. Jockev E. Denny was suspended by the starter for fivedays for disobedience at the post. Good prices were realized in the uiutuel combinations todav. The successful two-horse combination, consisting of Dr. Watson and Turret, paid .40 and the throe-horse. Queen Marguerite, Kthelda and Amoret. paid 1;.0. The ltianchi stable scored a double with Turret and Silver Knight. Both were ridden by Loftus. Jockey C. Turner also piloted two of, the afternoons winners. . .
