. . i : : PLATERS GIVEN A CHANCE AT PIMLICO. Poorer Class of Horses Provide Spirited -Racing at Baltimore Course. "Baltimore, Md.. October 19. A program for the poorer class of horses was arranged by the Maryland Jockey Club at Pimlico this afternoon, but the racing was spirited and the big crowd present had plenty of excitement. One of the. closest finishes of the- meeting came with the. running oCthe fourth race, at one mile and forty yards. J.- Bi Widecer sent the favorite to the post in Chas. F. Grainger, but evenovitu, jockey Shilling in the saddle, he was not goodienough to stall off the closing rash of Annie-Sellers, which, well ridden by Guy Burns, came from last place to win by a nose. A good -thing was put over in the opening race. Black Chief, which has been entered several times and withdrawn, found the right spot today, and began the davs surprises. It. T. AAilsons Mexoaua. which ran the fastest three-quarters of the meeting last time out, was a great favorite with the public, but Black Chief went right with her in the first furlong and Mexoana would not extend herself, being beaten both by Black Chief and Sal ArolatiIe. Then followed the defeat of another strong choice m the second, when Herbert Turner, thought to be a sure winner, retired early and pulled up in last position. There was an excuse for Herbert Turner, however, as the horse bled. The winner was Chilton Squaw, purchased by John Farrell, Jr.. from Mrs. Itobert AV. AAahlen a day or two ago. Al AVestons Garry took the third purse easily. The Hunters Steeplechase llapdicap resulted in victory for the second choice, Keunewick, which simply ran away from Adventurer, the tirst choice. Old Firestone, which recently has been raced as a jumper, started in the two-mile flat race- for steeplechasers, and made a show of his company. Dr. J. S. Tvree, of AVashington, should have won the last nice with his mare Cheek, but Schuttinger gave the mare a stupid ride and Cheek was second to the old gelding. Dreamer. S. C. Ilildreths Hampton Court, which won the Pimlico Selling Stakes yesterday, spread his foot in that race and will not be able to start again during the meeting. AVatcrvale, August Belmonts great 3-ycar-old, pulled up lame this morning after a work-out, and it is probable that he will be retired for the season. Theo. F. Coles is. handling several yearlings for Herman Flippen and Max Hirseh. All are by The Commoner, and Mr. Coles says that a filly owned by Mr. Hirsch and a colt owned by Mr. Flippen are the fastest yearlings he ever broke.
