HIGH PKIVATE WINS AGAIN WAINWRIGHT RACER BEATS GOVERNOR GRAY BY NARROW MARGIN. Azyiado Scores Impressively in Race in which Lady Lightning Makes Decidedly Poor Showing Coup on Jeff Bernstein. Cincinnati, O., October 2C. Jockey Faius weak handling of Governor Gray in the feature race at Latonla this afternoon was hold responsible for that good throe-ycar-olds defeat by High Private. Governor Gray, when straightened for the stretch drive, appeared all over the winner. High Private at this stage was being hard urged, while Governor Gray was going handily. High Private continued, under punishment, to maintain his forward position during the last sixteenth and gained on the three-year-old steadily, but even then Fain remained listless and passed the tiuish sitting perfectly still a neck behind High Private. The latter, while scoring a lucky win, nevertheless showed a high class performance by shouldering 110 pounds and running the mile in 1:3SJ. Enjoyable sport resulted from todays program, and as u fair share of the purses went to favorites the majority of the speculators fared well. The attendance was again large and racing conditions could not have been improved on. In the second race Azyiade thoroughly established her right to rank with the best by an impressive victory over opposition that included Lady Lightning, winner of the two most important juvenile stakes in Kentucky this season. Lady Lightnings showing today was decidedly off color. Stone Street came right back with another victory when he lauded the purse in the tifth race. The consistent Silver Knight, which has had a remarkable stretch of victories to his credit since the first week at Louisville, made a game bid for the purse, but Stone Street only toyed with him in the stretch. Jeff Bernstein, making his reappearance under colors for the first time in more than a year, was the medium for u betting coup by his owner, John "McLaughlin, and his frieuds. He made good, but only after a hard and energetic drive ou the part of-Taplin. his rider. K. It. Bradley took a purse when Bell Horse won the closlug dash and Bouncing Lass carried tin; Hitchcock colors to victory in the opening. Thomas C. McDowell telegraphed today from Laurel for ten stalls in which he intends to quarter the horses he will ship here immediately after the lose of the Maryland course. Others now ou the way from Laurel include J. F. Schorr and J. A. Strode. J. U. Statler is another owner who intends to ship here after the close of Laurel racing. J. U. Strode was among todays arrivals from Laurel. He stated that H. D. Brown will go right ahead with his Havana plans for a race meeting in the Cuban capital this winter. He has already begun remodeling the old Almendares track and will have it in readiness for opening December 15. Mr. Strode also had a talk with F. J. Pons and W. F. Schulte. who are identified with the Charleston. S. O.. racing venture and botli are emphatic in their declarations that there will be racing in Charleston the coming winter, legiuning in January. Messrs. Pons and Schulte left Laurel several days ago for Charleston to begin the building of the new track. Advices from Mexico City are to the effect that prospects for the inauguration of racing in Mexico on Sunday next were never brighter and that everything is in thorough readiness. The special train which left Louisville for Mexico City with owners, trainers, jockeys and horses, had a remarkable run and lauded in Mexico City eighteen hours ahead of schedule. All the horses shipped well, according to report. Messrs. H. K. Knapp and F. B. Hitchcock returned tonight to New York. The filly Sprite is slowly recovering from her mishap, but according to trainer Karrick, will not be in condition to race again this season. Jockeys J. Deavenport and Denny were each suspended six days by the starter. There was much complaint this morning at the track on account of some ones action in poisoning pet dogs by the wholesale. Sixteen dogs were put to death by moans of the poison. 0. A. Bianchi will winter eleven horses at Douglas Park, including six yearlings. Eugene Elrml has made preparations to send his Juarez special from here on Monday, November 13, two days after the close of the meeting here. The rates for horses are 70.17 per car, including six attendants free to Memphis and two attendants free to El Paso. The passenger fare to El Paso ou the special will be 2.20.
