ANOTHER GREAT DAY AT LAUREL. Sir John Johnson Takes Handicap and Rosshampton Scores in Steeplechase. Laurel, Md October 2C. This was one of the gala days of the Laurel meeting. The management provided a splendid card of seven races with a nov elty race as an additional attraction. The fields were well matched and stirring finishes resulted. Heads, noses or necks separated the first two in the first six races and in some of them the winners re utained in doubt until the official placing was displayed. The racing conditions could not well have been improved upon and a large crowd was in attendance. The feature races included a steeplechase and a six-furlongs handicap. Samuel Koss Rosshampton proved best in the jumping contest, winning by a neck from Lizzie Flat. Black Bridge, the favorite, ran a disappointing race and was easily beaten for second money. While a majority of the winners found strong support, all the favorites were beaten. Sir John Johnson showed some of his old-time speed in the six furlongs handicap, in which he led a field of fast sprinters from start to finish. Gold stein roughed it a bit In the homestretch, bumping Stilly Night when the latter moved up with a determined challenge at the sixteenth post and seriously interfering with the chances of the latter. Guy Burns, who had the mount on Stilly Night, complained to the judges, but the latter were evidently of the opinion that the interference was not serious enough to warrant a change in placing, and the result stood as the. horses finished. Isidora, a tllly that Capt. P. M. Walker purchased at the sale of the Sanford horses at Buffalo Inst summer, bids fair to develop into a useful racer. She showed a smart performance this afternoon when she outgamed T. C. McDowells Star Jasmine after a loug stretch drive, in which she got up in the closing stride to win by a head. Mulls owner was forced to stand a raise of 05 to retain his filly after she won the sixth race. C. J. Odell was responsible for the bidding. The novelty race resulted in a victory for one of the foot runners. K. Kennedy, a baseball player from Memphis who played in the Thrco I league last summer, beat Elizabeth narwood, one of the thoroughbreds, by a few feet. A collection was taken at the track this morning by James Milton for W. H. Shadley. About 40 was realized and it will be sent to Covington, Ky., where Mr. Shadley is confined to his home. Former Governor. Frauk Brown of Maryland and Win. A. Porter of Pittsburg -were guests of the management this afternoon, rand occupied II. ,D. "Browns private box duriug the runniiig of the races. The former made it iossibIe for racing to be conducted with betting in Maryland, he having been in office when the present law under which racing is held was passed.
