LAUREL MEETING ALL BUT OVER. Patronage Continues to Be of Prosperous Proportions and Apache Is Only Winning Favorite. Baltimore, Md., October 20. The last day but one of the inaugural meeting at Laurel brought out another large crowd, Baltlmorcans taking advantage of the opiKirtunity to witness the decision of a good card provided by the management. Thu public found the task of picking the right ones as dillicult a proposition as it has been right along and the afternoons results showed only one winning favorite. Apache was the successful public choice. Many owners shipped their stables to Norfolk tonight ami at the conclusion of the meeting tomorrow a sH?cial will pull out for the Jamestown Jockey Clubs course. The ovcrllow who wore unable to obtain stabling at Norfolk will participate in the half-mile track meeting to be held at Marlboro. A majority of todays races furnished stirring contests with small margins separating the first two at the finish. Little Kmc, Jack Nunnally and Hat-teras were some of the surprises, these three winners being at long odds. The former raced for the first time in the colors of 1. M. Chill, who is organizing a string to race at one of the winter tracks. Little Erne showed great courage in his race, winning by a length from Gift after disposing of Vesper In the early stages. Aspirins victory in the mile allowance race was due to Guy Burns determined finish. The Walker horse just lasted to beat Homecrest a nose after a sinew-straining drive. Hoffman, the supposed good thing of the race, landed in third place. Heavy support developed for this horse and he went to the post an odds-on favorite. Hattcras, winner of the closing race, changed hands after his victory. He was entered to be sold for 00 and was boosted to 1911.sh00 by W. B. Carson, whose Muff finished second. Andy Blakeley refused to protect the colt and he became the property of Mr. Carson. The steeplechase was well contested, Duffield proving best and winning by a length from Lizzie Flat, which iu turn beat Gun Cotton a head for second place. Charles It. Ellison was a visitor at Laurel this afternoon. His misunderstanding with the management has ljoen straightened out and ho was again allowed the freedom of the course. Sam Ioiiis added SpelllHJund and Queen Bee to his stable this morning, having purchased tho pair from M. 0. Prichard, who is retiring from active participation in the sport for this winter at least. Manheimer wrenched himself in his race and pulled up lamn. The Laurel division of John W. Schorrs stable left for Latonla last night. A. B. Gallahcr and Francis J. Pons also shipped their horses to the Kentucky track. Mr. Pons himself left for Charleston tonight. He reports that a large force of men , are at work on the new course at Charleston and that the track iself has already been laid out. The work is in charge of a civil engineer who helped in the construction of Belmont Park and the Montreal Jockey Clubs course at Blue Bonnets. The contract for the lumber for the grandstand and stables have been awarded and the construction of both will be well under way before the close of the Norfolk meeting. Heceut work-outs.
