LATONIA HAS AN OFF DAT UNFAVORABLE CONDITIONS HAVE EFFECT ON SPORT AT KENTUCKY TRACK. Attendance Slimmest of tho Season and Betting Light Doncaster Only. Favorite to Score Three Winners at Lorn; Odds ia Mutuels. Cincinnati, O., October 30. Racing conditions could hardly Iiave been more unfavorable than those that prevailed at Latonla today. The result was that the attendance was the scantiest of the season and the betting slumped badly. The associations loss today will exceed ,000. A poor card was a. contributing cause, most of the starters being of the cheaper grade and inviting little or no speculation. Favorites, with the exception of Doncaster in the opener, met with defeat. Viley, in tho fourth, ami Chemulpo, in the fifth race, were tho principal surprises. Vileys victory was lluky and was due -In the main to incompetent handling that Gould gave Rose of Jcddah, the favorite. The latter was much the best and with intelligent guidance, would have taken the purse by a good margin. Chemulpo probably would not have won but for County Tax having been stricken with a hemorrhage just when his victory appesircd assured. Withdrawals reduced the field to four sturters in the closing dash and all were confidently backed. Hazel Burke turned up as tho winner over the unlucky Falcada, which lost mainly through Interference that he encountered during the running. Madam Phelps graduated from the maiden class iu the second race, leating among others the frequently disappointing Syringa. J. 15. ResiK-ss took a purse when Lottery Man romped away from a cheap band in the third. The horses of Gallagher Bros. W. Clay, J. Gass and J. W. Schorr arrived today from Laurel, Md. The three-horse combination, consisting of Viley, Chemulpo and Hazel Burke, paid one lone backer 57.20 for his investment. Beginning tomorrow, all the purses, except the handicap, will be 00. The handicap purse will bo Increased to 1911.sh00. The purse reduction followed a. conference of Messrs. Hachmelster and Myers, representing the Latonla Jockey Club, and the members of the Kentucky Stsite Racing Commission. The Latonla representatives showed by their books that the track has been sustaining losses nearly every day since the inauguration of the fall term of racing here and when the niemlers of the commission grasped the situation, they readily voted for a purse-reduction here. It Is Mr. Haehmolsters Intention to give daily handicaps of and 00 purses for the better horses. Jim Gaffney came out of his last race in such bad condition that he will be permanently retired from the turf and sent to tho stud. He was mated with six mares last spring. Jockey E. Dugau has not fully made up his mind where he will ride the coming winter. He Is at present under verbal coutract to R. F. Carman. The latter Intends to campaign his string at Chart lesion, S. C.
