.MARLBORO MEETING OPENS AUSPICIOUSLY.: Washington. D. C, November 1. The ten-days meeting of the Southern Maryland Racing Association opened at the Marlboro track this afternoon and, although cloudy weather prevailed, there was a good crowd present, as Baltimore and Washington were both well represented. Six races, including the Marllwro Steeplechase, made up the days program- and. as large and well matched fields went to the post in each instance, the sport was interesting. Nino lMxks did business in the ring and they found plenty-of business. The Marlboro Steeplechase over the short course was the days feature and It was won in easy fashion bv the favorite. Duilield. He was reserved, in a good position until about half a mile from home, then assumed command and drew away witii ease in the stretch, while Lampblack secured second place. Two favorites and the same number of second choices were winners, so that the talent began the meeting in a fair way. Fairbrother started off well by riding three winners. He won the first two purses with Apache and Sabo Blend and the closing dash with El Oro. It was learned today that J. L. Holland purchased the good horse, nilarious, from James R. - Kccne after the running of the Annapolis Handicap at Laurel yesterday for the reported price of 3,000. Algernon Daingorfield acted for Mr. Keene in the. matter. Mr. Holland also claimed the good two-ycav-old. Republican, from John J. Hyland1 when his flliv, Efliciency, was bid up after winning the race, in which Republican started at Laurel recently.
