PRESUMPTION HAS FEIENDS HACMANUS COLT REGARDED AS FACTOR IK COKING KENTUCKY DERBY Is Receiving Consideration in Spite of Brilliancy of ofHs Hs Opposition G H Coylos Unbeaten UnbeatenHawthorn Hawthorn Molded on Heroic Scale Louisville Ky April C There are some well posted turfmen who would express no surprise should the Kentucky Derby of 1012 set to be run on Satur ¬ day May 11 be won by the Californiaowned geld Iiig Presumption This good threeyearold is the property of James MacManus a liberal sportsman who has figured on the turf with prominence during lie past five years He is trained by O A Bianchi a skilled conditioner and an uptodate horseman in very sense of the word It is understood that if that rider can be secured jockey Taplin will pilot Presumption In the great Kentucky race raceThose Those who treat lightly the Derby chances of Presumption are in a measure basing their objec ¬ tion to tlie gelding on account of Ills sex Only two Dirrbys have been won by geldings The first of tlitfe was William Asters Vagrant in 1870 and the ether Green B Morris Apollo in 18S2 Typhoon II Stone Street and Douau the winners of the event in 1807 1 OS and 1910 respectively were gelded afterwards but nil were colts when they won this coveted prize The most glaring failure of a geld ¬ ing in tills great race was in 1S8 when the lamons Proctor Knott was beaten by Spokane SpokaneSo So it may J e conceded that the objectors to Pre Mimption have something on which to base their argnuients Still tho fact stands out that two geld ¬ ings have won this great race and both lowered the colors of sensational colts Vagrant in his race defeated the great Parole Iwsidcs tlie superior performer Croedmoor while Apollo beat in Runuy nicilc one of the hottest favorites this race has ever everPresumption Presumption did much good racing as a two yearold In twentytine starts he was nine times lirtl four times second and four times third and was only unplaced four times He earned as a twovoarold 45G In one of his races he finished In front of Tlie Manager He beat Wortli iu an ¬ other race and upon still another occasion be fin ¬ ished in front of Sonada In most of these con ¬ tests he had slight weight concessions He is a handy horse either in mud or on the dry and this accounts also for some of his strong following at I lie present time timeNo No horse in the Derby is mere richly bred than is Presumption His sire Golden Maxim was a high clnss rare horse and in the stud has sent to the racs such notable performers as Follie Levy Royal riiitlve Captain Carmody The Golden Buttcrlly inldeii Agnes Maxims Pride and Troy Weight Golden Maxim Is by Golden Garter Miss Maxim liv Maxim Golden Garter is a halfbrother to Sainfoin he sir of August Bclmonts 125000 Triple Crown this son of Golden Maxim and Prouil ProuilJ J lpl fuinption is a lilgii type of a threeyearold Tip has au abundance of size a good way of going i ns a twoyearold showed an ability to bandit iflir Moreover he is a game horse and was only i ton last season when Ills opponent showed supe Ilnr speed T1at Is he was always running his best tifJ finish and in a majority of the races in which ill lie finished fls true as steel He has wintered Jl2il ran And appears now to 1m a matured threeyearold e i twovearold racing Presumption outclasses many of the Kentucky Derby winners of the past Of course he was hardly as good as a twoyearold as were such winners of tho event as Vagrant Aris tides Hindoo Ben Ali Kingman Ben Brush Plaudit Manuel Lieutenant Gibson AllanaDale and Sir HiToii but of the other names that figure is winners of this race there is not one which Pre ¬ sumption could not have defeated at this age With this in his favor and the fact that he has defeated all tha cracks which will be opposed to him in the big race next May James MacMJanns crack gelding surely must be given seme consideration in the figur ¬ ing on tlie probable Kentucky Derby winner of 1912 1912The The unbeaten twoyearold Hawthorn was placed under the standard at Churchill Downs a few days ago and it was ascertained that he stood sixteen hands one inch high A casual glance at this sensa ¬ tional youngster does not suggest anything like such Herculean size so evenly balanced is he all over He Is surely as good a looking twoyearold as was ever trained in Louisville and if any colt beats him in his Kentucky stake engagements this spring and summer he will surely be a youngster of great quality Of all the great twoyearolds that have graced the American turf he probably is tlie first youngster that ever won a race as early as Janu ¬ ary 21 with as much as 127 pounds up Hawthorn was a late foal and therefore when he won this race lie was a twoyearold only in name On actual fig ¬ uring lie was still a yearling Hawthorn is a product of August Bclmonts Nursery Stud near Lexington He was one of the several of tlie get of Hastings that the chairman of the Jockey Club sent to tho sales market last fall Ho was purchased by his present owner G H Coyle for COO Hastings his sire has been a leading AnArican stallion ever since he was retired from the turn One of the great stars lie sired was Fair Play a turf winner of 86050 and Hastings is a halfbrother to the Ken ¬ tucky Derby winner Plaudit He is a son of Spend ¬ thrift and the famous Cinderella one of the most noted broodmares of recent years Hawthorns dam Is White Thorn by Nasturtium This marc was never raced but she showed stake form as a year ¬ ling and In her early twoyearold form went slightly lame as a result of which Mr Belmont retired her Hawthorn has shown that his judgment was right Nasturtium her sire was himself a great twoyear old So highly was he regarded that the late W C Whitney paid 50000 for him with the intention of sending him to England to run in the Epsom Derby The malady which afflicted the horses owned by MK Whitney the year he was a threeyearold also hit Nasturtium and the mighty horse went to he stud resting on the laurels he had earned as a kindergaren performer performerHawthorn Hawthorn races like a veteran of the tnrf lie loaves the barrier like an old sprinter and beats his opposition in the first quarter The five races ho has won ho has taken without Iteing touched by whip or spur and even his trainer does not know the colts real capability He is in the hands of W S Trevey who lias proven his ability as a trainer iu the last few years Hawthorn is not mncli of a work horse He Is inclined to play when on tha track for exercise He likes to throw his boy when ¬ ever he gets a chance but does not run away like most horses after lie unseats his rider and just loaf around Whenever he does this his trainer walk out on the track and the great colt comes right t him lie does not like the Idea of having anybody ride him around In his last race at Juarez he threw his rider at tlie post hut never even went out from under the barrier and waited there until Assistant Starter Harrv Morrissey took him by the head and led him back in line with his rider again np Starter Cassidv then lifted tlie barrier Hawthorn was m his waV and lie drove Henry Mcpaniel with his big stable to Coeur dAlene In Idaho for in that race lie easily defeated Moller a colt which that noted horseman regarded as one of the best youngsters he had ever sent to the post Said Mr McDaniel I cant go to Kentucky for Hawthorn will soon be on his way there I am not going to take my two yearolds to any track he goes to because I havent got even an old horse in my stable that can beat him Hawthorns owner has never actually set a price on his great gelding He has had some nibbles and it is even reported that lie has been offered 12500 for him Said a good judge recently at the Downs he being a man who has seen all the races of tho son of Hastings in Mexico Were the New York tracks oi en and the big stakes to be won that ruled there several years ago Hawthorn would soil today fas as much as tlie sire of his dam Nasturtium brought back in 1001
