FASTER WORK AT CHURCHILL DOWNS Trainers Begin to Speed Up Their Horses in Prepar ¬ ation for Approaching Meeting MeetingLouisville Louisville Ky April C Most of the fast work at the local tracks today was done at Churchill Downs on a course as yet a bit dead underneath but which is daily improving Of the Derby candi ¬ dates Free Lance and Nicias which represent George J Long in the entry list for the big race did a bit of the fastest work They worked threeeighths pulling up in 37 the first quarter being covered in 25 Both were under double wraps all the way Chief Lindscy from the stable of Dan Lchan went live furlongs in 105 and Patruehe from W J Spiers barn eantered a mile in 159 These were the only Derby candidates speeded all the others only getting slow exercise exerciseThere There was some good twoyearold work at three furlongs and less C C Van Meter worked his Mar ta Santa Praise colt his Cederstrome Gold Rose polt and his Blues Queen Beluga colt three furlongs in 40 tlio first quarter of which was run in 24 He JU80 work l a filly by Deutschland a quarter in 24 Jjio Sir Huon Rainfall colt in George J Longs stable worked three furlongs in 37 going the first eighth in rjif and the narter n 24 O A Kinnclii sent ins Ormondale filly an easy quarter in 26 Other works were wereAl Al Midler Flveeighths in 109 cantering Ben K Sleet Fiveeighths in 1OG easily easilyCasey Casey winter winterShelby Shelby West is expected at the Downs from Cliarlcson with the string of horses he has been rac ¬ ing there for L P Doerhoefcr Among the racers trainer West will bring arc Ursula Emma Tommic Thompson and Mary Davis DavisJohn John W Schorrs Aylmer which carried his colors here in the Kentucky Endurance Stakes last fall and broke down has been retired to the stud at Kcenland Farm near Lexington Mr Schorr has shipped his useful race mare Fulfill there to be mated AylmerW with Aylmer W F Cisco has White Wool at the Downs now This good racer never looked better in his career He is working well and while he was not asked to do anything sensational he could have run a fast mile yesterday He is carrying more flesh than he has since a yearling and yet he seems to be almost in racing condition Mr Cisco has a fancy that White Wool this spring will lower the colors of some of the much talked about stake horses of the older division divisionT T P Hayes has only two old horses in his list of twentythree horses in training at Douglas Park These are Jabot a fouryearold and the threeyear old filly Ilalawa which bids fair to be a good selling plater She is hardly of stake class and this ac ¬ counts for Mr Hayes declaring her out of the Kea tucky Oaks The rest of Mr Hayes string twenty one head are twoyearolds Two of these are at ¬ tracting special attention due to the fact that their dams are good race mares namely May Hampstead and Lady Savoy Both of these youngsters arc by Ornament OrnamentJ J B Respess is still considering the offer made by the millionaire turfman H B Dtiryea for tin contract he holds on the crack jockey J Loftus He cannot quite make up his mind to let the boy go though the sum offered by Mr Duryca for the rider is liberal If Mr Duryea succeeds in securing Loftus that rider will go at once to France where the racingThe New York turfmans horses are now racing The latest arrivals at Douglas Park include Frank Smith who brought in three head from Sedalia Mo and It T McMillan who came with two head from Lexington J Frye is also now here with Coruua and F Starita with Queen Marguerite There are now ninetyone horses in the barns at Douglas Park and there are close to three hundred horses in train ¬ ing at the two tracks tracksJ J B Respess has up twentyfour horses twelve of which are twoyearolds The Kentucky Derby winner of 1009 Wintergrcen is still at the Respess farm but he will take up the son of Dick Welles within the next two or three weeks It looks as If lie will train soundly this season One of the older horses in the Respess string doing extra well here now is the speedy filly Imprudent Mr Respess has one twoyearold which looks like a crackcrjack He is a black colt by Dick Welles Lass of Langden the dam of Lad of Langden Bruce Rice and other winners He is one of the best looking colts Dick Welles has yet sent to the track trackAl Al Woodman has arrived at the Downs with a string of four horses headed by the veteran cam ¬ paigner Hiram now eight years old I
