MEXICO WILL BUY THOROUGHBREDS Of more than passing interest to breeders of this countrv is the following from a recent article by Vigilant published in London Sportsman SportsmanThere There appears after all to be a likelihood of a demand for bloodstock in Mexico though breeders there have bccn having a very bad time One of them writes under date of June 29 When I wrote to enquire about Ppstumus and Book things appeared to be quieting down all over tho country the new government appeared to take up the matter of horse breeding and there was a likelihood of its helping us the few breeders to import fresh blood All was knocked on the head by Mr Oroscos revolution and in this part of the country we have been practically at the mercy of the boVdes of a bandit called Zapata They prevented the trains from running coii tinuallv cut down the telegraph wires and sacked tin towns and Haciendas they knew to be defence less Thev fell on this place Hacienda de San Gabricyi on April 21 and took thirty horses amongst them two of the stallions Maddisuii and Handy Bill ami a dozen other blooduus and polo IKinies Sorcerer escaped owing to the fact that I In savages found the mystery of a sliding door one too many for them They were in a hurry They also took our bookkeeper and it took 500 to get him back The stallions they treated shamefully for after knocking them about all night they attempted to ride them next morning The great beasts resented this one of them using his teeth with good effect Then they made them light When they were well torn and exhausted they led them into the moun ¬ tains till they could walk no more and abandoned them Some faithful servants had followed them and Handy Bill got back bruised and tired but not much damaged Maddisou however took a week to get buck and is still u nervous wreck It looks again at this moment as if the country was on its way to pence and quiet If this occurs there are assurances that the government will at ¬ tend very seriously to the horsebreeding industry The revolution almost cleared the country of horss I am confident that my brothers and myself will have a voice in the deliberations as to the means of repairing the damage and the thoroughbred will have its day dayThe The above true story might have come out of one of Gustavo Aimards books and I make no CXCILSX for giving it in full as it opens up the prospect or a large demand for bloodstock in Mexico in the near future
