Hil-dreths Skill Halter Men Active. Baltimore, Md., October 7. The races at Laurel this afternoon were nm under cloudy skies, which threatened at any minute to unload a delude. As a matter of fact a little rain fell during the afternoon, hut not enough to affect the going, which was last. Well-matched lields went to the post and all six raees furnished stirring contests;. The Belmont colt, Belamour, had to lie hard ridden to heat Sherwood a neck in the opener and j Madeline L. just did manage to stagger home a ! head in advance of Meh.s In the jumping race. In the third John Keardon came from behind to gee home a nose hefore Colonel Ashmeade. In the feature race, a live and a half furlongs handicap for two-year-olds, Gotelus came from lieiiind witli a rush and scored hy a scant hall length. The next thrta were heads apart. Flittergoid was caught in tlie harrier or lie would have heen a keen factor. YVllow Eyes just did last long enough to withstand Mary Ann K.s rnsli in the fifth and Gregg out-gamed Polly II. in the closing dash. iopulveda was claimed after lie was beaten bv W. t Weant. whose Stelcliff iluished fourth. William Garth has offered jockey Buiwell a contract for next season, the terms of which call for a retainer of 00 per month, besides the usual fees for winning and losing mounts. The report that C. O. .Smith had purchased the betting privileges for the Jamestown meeting is erroneous. The ring, as in past years, will be strictly an open one and will he in charge of Mortimer Mahoney. The haltermen were in the limelight this afternoon. Belamour, winner of the opening dash, was up ,K0 over his entered price ot ,500.- but Thid wis proteotcnnd lmught in by S. C. Hildreth for his emnloyer,,,frBgust Belmont. After John Rear-do:i won the third race he was hid up from 00 to ,200 by Charlie Fox. who presumably acted for John W. Schorr, former owner of the horse. Jockey Joe MeCahey was a visitor at Laurel this afternoon. It was his first appearance since he was taken down with an attack of typhoid fever a couple of months ago. Thirty-nine books were in line this afternoon. This included the two fielders. Among the new-layers was Eolc Iearsall. The condition books for the Pimlieo meeting were distributed among the horsemen this afternoon. There are a great number of selling handicaps in the book. The races were put on to discourage horsemen from taking advantage of selling races in order to win bets. Kate K. was claimed out of the first race bv J. 15. Gray for ,400.
