In-im formation secured hy private detectives at the Wil-T lows race track has been forwarded to the attorney-generals department with the request that an Indictment against the club be made before the grand juiv now in session. Tiie evidence is in the nature of information that a race meeting is in progress despite the provision rf the law which prohibits a second meeting on the mine track unless twenty days shall have elapsed hetween the meetings. Action by the attorney-generals department is also requested under the section of the act as recently amended which renders liable to punishment anyone who "Imports, makes, buvs. sells, rents, leases, hires, or keeps, exhibits, employs or knowingly allows to be kept, exhibited or employed in any part of any premises under his control, any device or apparatus for the purpose of recording any bet or wager, or selling any pool or any gambling, wagering or betting machine or device." Tills action is taken by the city solicitor following the recent decision of the City Council that if any infringement of the law took place on the .Willows track that prosecutiou be brought. The private detectives who visited the track secured the names of all those who. at the time, were employed in connection with the operation of the pari-mutuel machines used for betting. The city, as owners of tlie Exhibition grounds, holds that despite any lease or suit-lease which may have been granted any infraction of tlie law permits it to step in and prosecute tlie offenders. As a corporation, as such, cannot be charged witli a criminal offence, the action will be taken by way of an indictment laid before tlie grand jury against those interested in tlie Victoria Country Club.
