RUNNING RECORDS OF THE CANADIAN TURF A Had not Duck Thomas run half a mile in 47 seconds iu winning a race at Minoru Park, Vaucouver. D. C, August 20, the Canadian racing season of 1013 would have passed into history without reducing in any respect the time records for the Dominion. For the first time in many years the racing on the tracks of eastern Canada failed to result in any new Canadian records. This circumstance should not lead to tin: conclusion that Canadian racing of 1013 fell below the high standard of the immediately preceding years, for most of the licst horses in training on the North American continent participated in the sport In the Dominion to the north of us. ltather may the failure to reduce existing records be attributed to the state of the tracks over which the racing took place. Several of the fastest of the courses making up .the Canadian Racing Associations circuit were much slower than normally, owing to the spreading of new top dressing and other causes. It may reasonably be expected that another season will bring a renewal of the general lowering of Canadian time records. Existing records were equaled in three instances during 1013. Custom House, ran three and one-half furlongs in 42 at Minoru Park, Vancouver, August 1, 1013, which tied the Canadian mark for the distance, made by Platinum over the same course. July 15, 1012. At Hamilton, June 25. M. D. Grubers sensational two-year-old. Little Nephew, by running five-eighths iu 50 equaled the Canadian record, standing to the credit of Ragman, Genesta and Florence Roberts. This record has stood since 100S. At Windsor, August 10, Miss Cayle, also a two-year-old, equaled the record of 1:05 for five and one-half furlongs, held jointly by Sewell and Novelty. The Fort Erie and Hamilton tracks hold most of the records for the distances at which races are frequently run, with the former decisively in the lead. It Is notable that the record for all distances of less than live furlongs stand to the credit of Minoru Park. This is partially due to the infrequent-- with which races at the shorter distances are run on the tracks of cssten Canada.
