SURPRISING IS A CHAMPION CARMAN COLT IS ACCLAIMED BEST OF THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS AT LAUREL. An Impressive Victory in the Annapolis Juvenile Stakes Clinches His Claim to the PremiershipFlying Fairys Handicap. Baltimore, Mil., October 25. It. F. Carmans Surprising clinched his right to the championship of the two-year-old division of the Laurel meeting this afternoon, when in the Annapolis Juvenile Stakes, six furlongs, carrying top weight or lis pounds, lie defeated the liest lot of youngsters that has lined up at the track, including August Belmonts Strom-IkjII. .1. 1$. Grays Gotelus and F. Mannixr. Superintendent. The track conditions were bad, the going being deep with sloppy mud. Surprising, showing a great liking for the mud. took the lead just after the barrier went up and boldly withstood the challenges of Stromboli and Gotelus. Stromboll and Surprising ran like a team to the turn for home, where Stromboli quit and Gotelus moved into second phue. The little Oklahohia horse ran a good, game race and made a gallant effort, lint lie coulu not overtake Surprising, which won comfortably. Superintendent suffered from bad racing luck and finished far back. Czar .Michael bled and fell on the far turn, but he was only temporarily knocked out. The most interesting race, perhaps, was the handicap for all ages ai one mile and an eighth, in which tapt. E. 15. Cassatts Flying Fairy was asked to concede much weight to older horses. The daughter of Aeronaut showed her quality by setting the pace all the way and successfully conceded thirty-nine pounds by the scale to Bob H., a notable mud runner. Ambrose stumbled shortly after the start and nearly fell. He showed an excellent performance and but for the mishap would probably have Sieen a contender. Flying Fairys victory was made the more impressive from the fact that she struck Iiertelf during the running and pulled up with her near hind ankle bleeding. The steeplechase was easy for L. Navarro, which had no trouble in defeating Octopus. Jim Hanson, the "good thing" of the race, retired early. Colonel Venule, one of the stockholders of the -IHilsvllIe Jockey, Club, was-:r visitor at the track this afternoon. Dr. McCuIly and James Rowe were among the notable arrivals of the day. Martin Foley. W. 15. Carson and J. Randolph are owners who have laid their plans to race at Juarez this winter. Hunter C. Breckenridge has leased his farm at Roanoke, Va., to V. T. Anderson and tlte Anderson horses will be wintered there. Joseph McLennan and Fred W. Gerhardy were at the track today in the interests of the coming meeting of the Maryland Jockey Club at Pinilico. After the first race F. K. Brown claimed Progressive from Thomas F. Sheedy for .-100. Perth Rock was claimed by Sam Louis for 000 after he was beaten in the fifth race. Jockey Buxton -today signed to ride for J. L. Holland for the rest of the season.
