AMATEUR RULING IS CRITICIZED. The desirability of having, wherever possible, all race meetings conducted under the siqcrvision of stipendiary stewards was recently further demonstrated in Western Australia, where at an eastern district fixture the honorary officials in charge are alleged to have created some tine precedents. Discovering that tbe favorite for a certain race was Ineligible to compete, they virtually informed tbe owners thereof that it would be a waste of time trying to win, but still allowed the animal to start, and his backers to lose their money. Aware of this, the associations of the "next best." as the result proved, were able to make some profitable investments, backed up by the ignorance and lack of practical experience of the amateur officials. What hapiicned at this meeting is yet another strong argument in favor of the contention that stipendiary stewards are an absolute necessity for the proper control of both country and metropolitan racing. .
