RACING CONTINUES FOMFUL PALMETTO PARK BOOKMAKERS SUFFER SHARP LOSSES ON DAYS RESULTS. Chilton King, Sir John Johnson, Briar Path and Ag-nier Make Up Quartet cf Winning Favorites at Charleston Course. Charleston. S. C, December 4.-Tune-like weather which prevailed today added vastly to the enjoyment of the racing and infused more life in the doings at Palmetto Park than has been the case fcinee the opening. The sport was interesting and as four favorites were returned winners, sharp losses were sustained by the layers. The improvement in the program contributed extensively towards increased speculation ami the thirteen hooks were kept busy attending to the wants of those speculatively inclined. A handicap for all ages at live and one-half fur-lungs served as feature and resulted in a clean-cut victory for the top weight. Sir John Johnson, over Brave Cunarder and Lochiel, lioth of which represented the 11. !. Uedwell establishment. The winner was at all times an overwhelming favorite and the recipient of confident supjvort. He showed his usual high order of speed for the lirst half, but gave his backets some concern in the stretch when Byrne, his rider, had to re.-ort to the whip to shake off BraVe Cunarder. The latter faltered slightly near the end. The lied well establishment, though failing to win a purse during the afternoon, furnished sharp contention In live of the races. Hearthstone, in the opening dash, missed scoring by a head, Viley, an outsider, beating him that margin. In the second race, Runway carried the Bedwell colors and Supreme beat him to the finish. Brave Cunarder and Lochiel divided the minor portions of the handicap pursu- and Michael Angelo, another Bedwell representative, landed in third place in the closing dash. Chilton King scored his second victory of the meeting when he just lasted to beat Spring Maid in the mile race and was the first of the winning favorites during the afternoon. Sir John Johnson, Briar Path and Agnier followed in unbroken succession in the remaining dashes. Briar .Paths, victory was trecomplished despite a bungling ride from Buxton and a bad jam in which she became involved at the start. Additions to the probable ranks of layers that arrived today included Jack Sturgis and Jack McDonald. Jockey Clarence Turner was taken suddenly sick just before race time and had to cancel his riding engagements lor the afternoon. r. J. Grefers good tilly. Floral Park, is reported to lie in a bad way and fears are entertained for her recovery. The police of the city and at the track are busy rounding up and ordering out of town the disreputable brigade that came in the wake of the turf followers. N. K. Beal arrived from Norfolk with his stable, which includes the useful performer El Oro. After wagering had been going on for about ten minutes in the first race bets were declared off and a new book made. Pluvious, which was the public choice, pulled up lame after his warm-up and was ordered withdrawn by the stewards. J. F. Smyth found it necessary to destroy the jumper Clan Alpine, which was taken down with an nttack of lung fever after his arrival here from Norfolk. Some creditable work-outs were noted this morning over the Palmetto Park track. The course was slow. Among the trials were: Al Jones Five-eighths in 1:0-1. Bob It. Mile in 1:411. Brave Mile in IMS. Campeon Half mile in 50. G. M. Miller Three-quarters in 1:22. Harry Lauder Mile in l:.r.l. Hill Stream Three-quarters in 1:23. John Furlong Mile and an eighth in 1:57. Little En Three-quarters in 1 :20. Ncllo Half mile in 51. Old Ben Mile in 1:47. Prince Chap Three-quarters in 1:18. Pulsation Three-quarters in 1:1S. Semprolus Half mile in 51.
