BETTING SUIT IN CANADA. Toronto, Ont., December 4. A writ was issued yesterday at the instance of John Greenwood, owner of Rosturtium and other horses, against three local men for conspiracy to defraud him of ,700. This amount represented winnings that he was not able to collect from two bets on Floral Park aud Bradleys Choice at Louisville last September. Wagers made off the race course are not recoverable in Canada, but the complaint in this instance is that the defendants, with whom Greenwood says he had been betting regularly, conspired to re-fust payment of large amounts, though settling when the money involved was inconsiderable. One of the defendants, Peter Sleegan, is a hotel proprietor, and hotel licenses in this city, which has but 110 bars in a population of half a million, are worth from 1913.sh0,000 to 25,000. It is understood that, he denies being connected with his son. another of the defendants, in auy betting transaction. The appeal in the case of Scully vs. Ryckman was argued before the Supreme Court at Ottawa this week and judgment was reserved. This was an action brought by Jack Scully, former bookmaker, against a Toronto lawyer, who had been interested in some of Scullys ventures before he was barred off Canadian tracks. Scully claimed that Ryckmau owned him ,000, while the latter declared that all the transactions were closed and accounts squared. At the trial Scully got a judgment.
