Charleston, S. C, March C. Rain, which has fallen here on nine previous Fridays that were set apart as ladies days at Palmetto Park, again . served as a drawback this afternoon, yet many of the gentler sex accepted the managements invi- -tntion to view the sport. The rain ceased before the opening dash, but fell copiously just before the j closing race and the return trip to town was attend- J with some discomfort. The track was again in 1 bad condition, hut as most of the starters were 1 tried and true mud performers the sport did not J sillier. Favorites again failed in most of the races, .1 j Coppertown and Helen M. being the exceptions. A selling handicap at five and a half furlongs was intended as the feature race, but the race for two-year olds at half a mile overshadowed it. The closing dash, in which some good platers met, also furnished a spirited struggle. Copiiertown, running in his best form, took the handicap in rather handy 1 fashion, with Mart re beating the extreme outsider, 1 f.thclhurg 11.. for second place. Martre and Ethel- burg II. both showed high speed in the early i stages, but when Murphy elected to pass them with Coppertown he did so in a flash. The juvenile scramble was unsatisfactory, as crowding eliminated Kewpie and Jesse Jr. from contention. Conimonada, which hail lieen showing speed -in his trials, was returned the winner,, with Splitit . second and Yellow Flower third. Tile winner was ; as much responsible for the crowding as any other, j bus as no formal complaint was made against him. lie otlicials did not disturb the original placing. The veteran Milton It. led all the way in the dosing dash and Helen M. made a runaway of the fifth. II. G. P.edwell bid Helen M. up 00 over her entered price of 00. but failed to get her. Todays visitors included Edward Leach, grand exalted" ruler of tin Elks, who is here on a brief visitor, and Former Senator Carl S. Uiirroughs, of New York, a staunch friend of racing. The fact that Dr. Jackson and Discovery are sick with fever is responsible for Senor Jamie Todd being tied uii here with the remainder of his string. Preparations had been made for the shipment of the eleven other horses in the Todd stable this morning to New York and from there to Venezuela. Jn fact, they had been loaded on the cars when Senor Todd was informed that a certificate would not be issued by the veterinarian on them. This means that thev will have to remain here for three days longer. A complete list of those which will be shipped to Caracas by Senor Todd follows: Floral Crown. Mattie L.. Belle of Normandy.
