A program for a mixed harness and running meeting to begin at Overland Park June 13 and end July 4. submitted by W. A. Read, of Vancouver, R. C, to the Colorado State Racing Commission, has met with that bodys approval, and Mr. Read this morning announced he would put Overland Park into shape for the meeting at once. He has taken a five-year lease on the track and obtained an option upon it which gives him the right of purchase at any time during the life of the lease. R. F. Leighton. of Vancouver, an old-time horseman and California racing official, and at the present time racing secretary of. the Rritish Columbia Thoroughbred Association, has been appointed secretary for the coming meeting. Judge Leighton is here and will open offices within the next few days. The program outlined by Manager Read to the commission provides for two trotting and pacing races during the first week of the meeting and six running races during the last two weeks. Chief of the harness events is a ,000 free-for-all pacing event, which should bring together some of the best pacers in the west. It is the largest purse of its kind ever offered in Denver. The program for the running races includes Colorado Derby of ,500, over the mile and a quarter course, a ,500 handicap for three-year-olds and upward, and a number of other stake races. There will be no entrance or starting fees. "I am going to do everything in my power to make this first meeting a success," said Mr. Read this morning. "Edward Tribe, who is well known in Denver, will be the starter, Judge Leighton will be racing secretary, and I am now negotiating with one of the best known racing otlicials in America to act as presiding judge. As far as the betting is concerned, I am not going to tolerate any book-making. Wagering will be through the pari-mutuel svstem, as in Kentucky, and on most of the Euro-Iiean tracks. The Kentucky racing rules, with slight modifications, and the American Trotting Association rules will govern the meeting. r . j ; - 5 J - - 1 - 1 t , . J f I s a ,: I. e s a e II a S - I II
