Prominent Personages Among Great Throng That Gives Sport in the East Grand Sendoff — Fathom Wins Stake and J. L. Holland Scores Thrice. Havre de Grace, Md., April IS. — A crowd of 10,000 turned out for the opening ot the spring season of racing here- this af Icrnooii. A great throng caine over trom New York, while Baltimore ami Philadelphia sent their delegations in six special race trains. It was Hie best opening at any of Hit* Maryland tracks in many years and augurs well for the coming race season in the east. It was an meal spring day and other conditions wen- in keeping. The track was iu splendid shape, the card a well balaic-.-d one- and a majority of the races furnished stirring finishes. Horses from the stable of .1. L. Holland wire conspicuously successful. Hauberk won the second race, Gordon the third and Qrasmere the fifth, carrying the Holland colors. The feature race, the Harford Handicap, worth ,800 to the winner, went to Hugh Pennys Fathom, greatly improved three-year-old. Which came from behind and. in a driving finish, got up in the final strides to beat Robert Bradley a nose on the post.
