SURPRISING RESULT IN HOWARD STAKES. Littlo Nearer, Regarded as Having Scant Chance, Beats Good Opposition at Laurel. Laurel, Md., October 8. A big surprise in the Howard Selling Stakes was the feature of the days lacing at Laurel lark. Of the eleven starters C. 11. Hobbins Little Nearer was little fancied and was the extreme outsider in the nuituels. paying 3.10 for , but, under vigorous handling by Fairhrother, was lirst home a half length in advance of the public choice. Montrcsor. Little Nearer was not best and was somewhat lucky to score. Had not Executor gone wide in entering the homestretch, lie would have beaten Little Nearer. The latter, however, showed a good game performance and resiKinded resolutely to the urging of Fairbrothcr. Gilford A. Cochrans Roval Martyr, which has been showing good form in recent races, took the third race from Lady Rotba. which was strongly fancied. A big crowd turned out, though the weather was cloudy. The attendance has shown a steady increase and the mutuel system is constantly gaining in favor. Sam Louis has resold Undercover to Mrs. Philip Stevenson. Louis took the horse out of a selling race a short time ago. Ual Parr .has sold -the three-year-olds Mater and Executor to F. S. Ilackett and both raced in the colors of their new owner this afternoon. Captain Edward B. Cassatt will arrive Sunday and his string of thoroughbreds will be brought to Laurel by trainer J. Simon Uealy. The stable was kept at Delmont Park for the meeting of the Piping Rock Racing Association. J. G. Foliansliee, who has long been an ardent supporter of racing, and whose colors were popular on the turf a few seasons back, put in his first appearance at Laurel this afternoon. Trainer W. It. Midgely will race the horses of Gilford A. Ccchran in Marvland until the close of the Maryland Jockey Club meeting at Pimlieo, when they will go into winter quarters. The program book for the next six days of racing at Laurel was isucd this afternoon ami distributed among the horsemen. It is built along the same lines as the book for the lirst week that proved so successful. It was a real Golden Maxim day, as three of the winners were by that sire,- namely, Royal Martvr, Little Nearer and Corslcan. Noble Grand was bid up 90 over his entered price of C0 by J. W. Hedrick. Jr.. and was retained. Sepulveda Was run up to 00 and bought by J. O. Talbott.
